Charles Albert has been called the eccentric member of the family. An article written at the time of his death, states:
DEATH RECALLS DAYS OF 1837---C. A. Montgomery, nephew of Rebellious Tavern keeper, passes at 82. CLAIMED EARLDOM
"a member of the Montgomery family, prominent in the early history of Toronto, died Monday at his home, 38 Triller Avenue. He had been ill for aobut six months.
A nephew of John Montgomery of Montgomery Tavern fame in the days of the Mackenzie Rebellion, he was a descendant of General Montgomery who captured Quebec. Among his ancestors was the Earl of Eglinton, from which Eglinton Ave. received its name. At one time, it was said, Mr. Montgomery laid claim to the title of Earl of Eglinton but refused to leave Canada to take up residnece in England and gain pocession of his title.
In years gone by, C.A. Montgomery was the owner of considerable property on Yonge Street. He had been retired from business for thirty years but in his younger days was well known as a travelling salesman. He had the distinction of traveling across Canada with a mule pack.
Surviving are his widow, Mry Doyule Montghomery, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Douglas and Mrs. Montgomery Cadieux orf Toronto; three sons, T.R. Mongomery, William Montgomery and Charles Montgomery, and three daughters, Elizabeth, Julia and Drusilla.

Richard Montgomery, son of Alexander Jr. and Juda (Judith) Montgomery was born in Muddy York, which would become downtown Toronto when they adopted the old Indian name for the location. His older sister, Sarah Montgomery married William R. Marsh in York in 1804 but Richard was not born until 1807. In 1812, the American forces defeated the settlers in York and burned down the government buildings and all the records in York. The family had an Inn or tavern called "Bird in Hand". Because of a falling out between the father, Alexander and oldest son, John, they cut the tavern in half. John removed his half to a new location, called it "Sickle & Sheaf,theinfamous Montgomery Tavern once said the meeting place for Mackenzie's group of rebels hoping to gain more freedom from the crown with greater protection of rights. Armed rebels planned at the tavern to attack the Parliamentary buildings and British troups. John had sold the Tavern and was not there when is was burned in 1837. John was tried as one of the conspirators and sentenced to hang. Some were but John was transported to Fort Henry where he spent time with others until they escaped.
Richard learned trade of making wagon and spinning wheels. He is shown to have lived in Markham up until 1870 cencus. His son David must have learned "wood turning" from his father, Richard. Not much more is known about Richard except that he fathered 14 children and David was their ninth. 13 appear to have survived. Sarah Ann died but others married and most had very large families.

Alberta Yakely (all their children given several years back by Jackey-Lou Daley Morran). Lillie Ida May Scott m.Hugh Campbell had Elsie, Gordon & Elman Campbell. Alexander Montgomery Scott m, Anna Penginna? Georgina McDonald had: Floyd, Ivan, Howard, Harold, Jesse & James Scott. Victoria Louise Scott m. Richard Henry Mitchel and had 8 children nad one baby died (shown on family group sheet) Everett Ward Scott m. Ethel Dell Denne & had: Dorothy, Betty & Verne Scott. Addie Violet Evelyn Scott m. Arthur Kent- had no issue. Statira Irene Scott m. Harry Cline & had: William, Charles, James, Clifford, Mary & Stanley Cline. Minthorn Lockwood & Florence (?) Scott were killed in auto accident in Ohio. Montgomery Androssen Eglinton Scott m. Catherine (Cassie) Stewart and had: Evelyn, Audrey, Joseph & Donald Scott. Mahala married second time to Stephen A. Howard.
When Alexander Jr. died in 1841, his eldest son, John was still in exile in Rochester, N.Y. Since there were bad feelings between Alexander Jr. & his son, Alexander III, he left a portion of his estate to daughters but the land was willed to his youngest son, Richard Montgomery in northwest corner ofYonge and Queen Street, composed of 600 acres. Statira & her husband, Stillwell Willson along with Alexander & Rebecca (Willson)MontgomeryIII were so upset as Richard's Will that they sued Richard for so-called debt and for a larger share of the estate. Do not know how the law suit was settled but it was one of several law suits between Montgomery families. When Richard died the property went to thier children. Betty Lou Lynn wrote that when Eaton Centre was being built in 1970's the land couldn't be purchased as "we still "own" it. This is not considered among the other rumors and publicity as to "false" stories of huge fortunes to land on Manhattan, Ireland, and even in Holland. These rumors about a vast "Montgomery Fortune," led some members to invest in getting a share in vast fortune & titles. Many sincerely believed was due the heirs from a number of source, even to Charles Albert believing he was the heir to Eglinton earldom. Some victims thought Alexander Jr. & Juda Myers came from wealthy families, depending on which story the victims were told. When there was no
fortune coming to them, certain persons of the family believed the instigators had taken everyone's money. However, those who had helped set up the fund told others that they too were victims also of the orginal con men. My grandfather, David and Uncle Bert believed also in the truth of it and so Uncle Bert started an investigation to prove the family's relationship to Alexander & Juda Myers. Back in 1920's it was the start of the families interest in genealogy that was carried on by Richard Arthur Montgomery, born in 1891 who was named after his grandfather in Toronto. In turn the grandfather, born in 1807 had been named after the famous General Richard Montgomery (whom David claimed was a first cousin of his Great grandfather, Alexander Montgomery Sr. Upon Richard's visit to Toronto and meeting his Aunt Jerusha Cadieux, he learned she also had believed the story of their relationship to Gen. Richard Montgomery. Both their fathers were supposedly brothers from northern Ireland. Because of this story also coming down in the Marsh family from Sarah Montgomery, Richard's oldest sister who would have known her grandfather, Alexander Sr. well before he left and returned to New York state, Dr. Marsh favors Robert of Brandrum, Kilmore Parish as being father of Alexander Jr. (born about 1718). When he came to America in 1754, he would have been 36 years old. He and Richard came over about the same time. Richard went back to Rhinbeck to marry Jennet Livingston and Alexander Sr. went to Connecticut and shortly (or previously)to marry Sarah Lockwood (daughter of wealthy Gershom Lockwood III of Greenwich, Ct.)
LET IT BE KNOWN: Upon checking the history of County Fermanagh which was dominated by the Irish Catholic McQuire chieftans, who in the late 16th century were defeated by the English crown. After the defeat of the O'Neills also the Ulster chieftans, Fermanagh were "Planted" along with most Ulster Counties. English and Scottish undertakers were appointed. In 1641 the McQuires again rebelled in support of a Catholic revolt. Many of the original planters were driven out and new "planters' were given lands. At this time it was the Brookes, Montgomerys, Leonards, Wyatts and Balfours. Following the Williamite wars of the 1600, planters began to replace even more of the Irish. The English and Scottish names include:Armstrong,Boyd, Carson,Elliot,Forster, Graham, Hamilton, Irvine (or Irving), Johns(t)on,Livingston,Morris, Noble, Patterson, Smith and Thompson.
These are the most common but there are numerous others. Several times you may note that the Montgomerys have connections with these. Others are the Cunninghams who were Scottish nobles. It seems the Montgomerys who went into southern states married Irvine and Cunningham women. They were usually better fixed financially and entered the King's colony where patents were given to those in the Kings favor. In New York state, Sir William Johnson on the Mohawk River and Sir Roger Livington at Rhinebeck along the Hudson River fortunately had been given huge grants of land which encompased the entire western section of the colony. It was in their Patents that Aleander Montgomery SR was later allowed to purchase land in the "flatts" south of Albany in Spencer Town, N.Y.

This is our direct ancestor thru Alexander Sr & Sarah Lockwood; Alexander & Judith Myers married in New York. First child, Sarah was born there in 1779. They sailed to St. Johns, NB aboard the ship, "Hope" may 1783. First settled in Gagetown where other children were born: JOHN was probably born in Feb 1783 in New York City, Abigail, Alexander III, Mary Ann,Statira, Juda were born in Gagetown between 1783 and 1798. They family went to lived in small new settlement in Muddy Flats, or York, Ontario (then still Quebec Prov). Records show birth of last two children. one being for Frances "Fanny" who Baptised with Juda in 1801. Their ninth and last child was a son.
Richard Montgomery b. 1807, married Hannah Smith the daughter of John Smith & Rebecca Chapman of Thornhill. They had fourteen children. David Montgomery was their ninth child, born in 1847 in Markham, Ontario.
During the War of 1812, the Fort York needed supplies to strengthen it against a possible American attack. It is reported that Alexander Montgomery Jr., John, his son, and William Hill his son-in-law were on a boat on Lake Ontairo when they spotted the American forces led by General Z. Pike making its way to attack the village of York. John is said to have gone ashore with Wm. Hill hoping on foot they could make speed in order to warn the village of York that the Americans would soon attack the fort. However, the Americans overwhelmed both the Fort and volunteers so that York was burned in 1813.

Alexander Montgomery Jr. of York, Ont. from 1797-1817 was mentioned 18 times in the minutes of Town Meetings of York. In archives it mentions that Alexander the father had a falling out with his eldest son, John over politics and they sawed the "Bird In Hand" on Yonge Street in half. John took his half several miles up north on Yonge Street where in time it became the infamous "Montgomery Tavern." In an account of this in C. Blackett Robinson Pub. 1885, "History of Toronto and County of York Ontario" page 117 under name of "John W. Mongomery, son of John & Mary Montgomery it tells about the two cousins playing in his father's old hotel, "The Sickle & Sheaf" as it was shelled by the British forces which knocked down three chimneys and resulted in it being burned to the ground. The British were responding to the so called threat of a rebellion. John was not there, but his sons, John Willmott was there with his cousin, Abraham Willson. John Montgomery had kept a room where they were the two lads were playing in an upstairs room. John sold the Inn but kept a room which he had not yet moved out some of his furnishings. "When the first cannon shot came crashing through his home, cutting down the three chimneys, they thought it was mere sport until a second shot entered the wing. Some of their friends removed them from the Tavern before it was burned to the ground."
John Wilmot Montgomery who was named for John's first wife, Mary Nee Willmott. (Family name spelled Willmott in Marriage bonds but his middle name Wilmot) The site of John Montgoemry's tavern now holds Postal Station "K" at Yonge St. and Montgomery Ave (used to be Finch). There is also a mounted plaque.
Alexander Montgomery Jr. is mentioned numerous time in the Town Meeting minutes of York, Ont. from 1797 through 1818. The father's will is available upon payment for a copy. It left most to his son, Richard. Thus his sister Statira who married Willson, sued Richard. Alex died in 1841 before John, his eldest son was pardoned by Queen Victoria. However, it did appear that they mended their political differences prior to John's arrest and trial. The bitterness, however, between father, Alexander Jr. & son, Alexander III had not been healed so Alexander III was also excluded from the father's will. Do not know the outcome of the suit brought by Stitira & Stillwell Willson to break the will but that further alienated several families. It appears that Alexander III had descendants who settled in the United States. It must have been one of them named George Montgomery who gave information about the family to Malcolm Stern for his book on Jewish Genealogy. On Myers V chart it shows, Bejamin & Rachel Myer, their sons and Judah Myer who married Alexander Montgomery and then shows only three children born to them: Sarah, John & Alexander.

Juda was born on 24 May 1759 in Phillips Manor, Yonkers, , New York; died on 16 Mar 1831 in York, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; was buried in St. James Cath., West King St., Old West York, Toronto, Canada. Juda Myer was born in Phillips Manor,(Yonkers, NY); family moved to Newport, R.I. at later date. Her father died 30 Nov. of 1776,so Rachel departed with her children, the defeated British army and other Loyalists leaving for New York City. Most Jews at the time were patriots but Rachel Myer remained loyal. Reportedly Benjamin, her son sided with British. Juda b. 24 May 1759 in NYC. She met Alexander Montgomery Jr. while living again in New York city during the British occupation. They married there abt 1778, while the fighting was still going on all around Manhattan, Long Island and at sea. Sarah Montgomery, their first child was born in New York city. They left in 1783 for St.Johns, NB where John, Abigail, Capt. Alexander III, Mary Ann & Statira were all born. The family moved on to Lower Canada, Town of York between 1798 or 1800.
Juda was baptised with several of her children in Gagetown in the Anglican church at Waterborough, N.B. She then used Christian version of her name, Judith Montgomery.
They had two more daughters, one born soon after they arrived in York, who died young was named Juda Montgomery. In 1804, Juda was baptized with a sister, named Frances ("Fanny"). Juda died at the age of nine years. Richard, a third son was born 9 Feb 1807 in Muddy Creek. Richard was her 9th child.
She would by then have been 48 years old. The above portrait, believed to be of Judith Montgomery and painted after 1800 in York has been in the family of John Wilmot Montgomery & Mary Gorham, down to Mary Louise Wilson Troy of Montgomery, Alabama. It might be the work of William Berczy who was a well-trained German artist who settled in York in 1793. She may have been about 41 to 45 years old. Judith Montgomery died on 3 Mar 1831 at the age of 72 yrs. Her husband Maj. Alexander Jr. would like another 10 years.

I thought it depended on when an artist of that training may have been in area to do portraits of both her and of Alexander Montgomery.

Could a William Berczy, a German artist who studied in Vienna, Austria and elsewhere have been the painter of her portrait? He arrived in York in 1794 and the Montgomery family in 1798. She would have been 38-40 years old. He brought over a group of 60 German settlers who went up to Markham but he lived for some years from 1794 until 1800's in York. The likeness of the portrait is so strikingly like her brother Mordecai's that I believe it is her portrait. However, a sister of Mary Louise Wilson Troy got into it and they now deny it is that great grandmother but instead claim is of a older Wilmot grandmother generation earlier. If so, what of Alexander's portrait, supposedly stolen.

I am more convinced than ever having seen other copies of William Berczy's work and considering all the other factors.
According to Jerusha (Montgomery) Cadieux, granddaughter of Alex & Juda, she is buried in Churchyard cemetery of St. James Cathedral on King Street East, Toronto, Ontario. Date she has for her death is 16 March 1830.
