Surviving relatives include two sons, LeRoy Bolton of Natchitoches, andWilliam Ernest Bolton of Provencal; four daughters, Mrs. J. B. Booker ofGrand Cane, Mrs. Carrie Bolton of Bellwood, Mrs. Elmer Masters, and Mrs.Azene Bolton, both of Provencal; and one brother, Dewey Montgomery ofProvencal.

Funeral services were held at the Shady Grove Methodist Church ofBellwood, Oct. 4, with the Rev. Wilmer Birdwell officiating. Burial wasin the Shady Grove Cemetery, under the direction of Warren MeadowsFuneral Home of Many.

LAND PURCHASE, SE 1/4 of Sec. 22, T.6 N., R.8 W. LA Mer. Containing159.30 acres.

On 10/28/1902 William A. Montgomery completes a Homestead Application forthe above reference land paying $17.96 in filing fees. On 8/30/1904notice is published of his intent to file final proof of the claim. Thefollowing are named as witnesses to prove his continuous residence uponand cultivation of the land. G. C. Parker, Bellwood, William R. Boswell,Petty Pool Massey and R. C. Boswell of Lotus. His affidavit claims thathe settled on the land on 1/5/1903 and has cultivated 8 acres. It alsostates that he is 42 years old at the time and a native born inLouisiana. On the land he has built a house, kitchen, crib and smokehouse with an estimated value of $400. On 8/30/1904 he makes payment of$398.25 or $2.50 per acre to purchase the land. On 5/21/1905 the land ispatented and filed.

LAND PURCHASE, SE ¼ of SW ¼ of Sec. 9, T.6, R.8, Containing 39.82 acres.

On 4/30/1859 William Henderson Montgomery completes and Affidavit for Actual Settlement and Cultivation of the above referenced land. He pays$19.91 or .50 per acre. On 10/22/1859 he files to perfect the title. He states that he has resided on the land since 1/1/1852 and the land has one dwelling house and six out houses and eight acres are incultivation. John S. Cobb corroborates his statement. On 6/1/1860 the title is recorded and certificate #14565 is issued.

Alexander and his wife, Casandra Moody, continue to be a mystery. Other than the marriage record from Amite County, MS nothing is known about the couple prior to their moving to Louisiana. Alexander evidently acquired some wealth prior to his locating in Louisiana based on some documented transactions in which he loans money to other members in his community. He was also evidently well educated and has quite a bit of business savvy as he understood the legal system and documented his loans going as far as securing the debts with liens on property.

A number of Montgomery's settled in Amite County in the late 1700's and early 1800's but as yet, no documented links have been established.

Alexander was most likely born in the United States with his ancestors arriving in America from Scotland or Ireland.

9/1/1823 Alexander and Williams Jones sign a marriage bond in Amite County, MS. A marriage license is issued and the marriage to Cassandra Moody takes place on 9/4/1823.

1827 Buys slave named Maria, subject of later lawsuit.

5/24/1827 Alexander loans $200 to Thomas McNeely at an interest rate of 10% and accepts a slave named Lydia as collateral.

7/10/1827 Alexander loans $1,070 to David Wrinkles securing the debt witha slave named Bob. The loan is repaid on 10/3/1828 and the mortgage on Bob is released.

2/10/1829 According to a bill of sale dated February 10, 1829, Alexande rpurchased an eight year old male slave named "Cornelius". The slave was purchased from John McGhee of Poison County, North Carolina for the sum of $325.

1/13/1844 Involved in a lawsuit with decendants of Nicholas Grubb relating to the purchase of a slave named Maria and her two children. Alexander purchased the slave in 1827 from Hugh and Elizabeth McNealy.The suit was file January 13, 1844, case #3498 in the Tenth Judicial District Court of Natchitoches Parish, LA. The trial ended on November20, 1845 with the plaintiff withdrawing the charges.

Alexander married Casandra Moody on 4 Sep 1823 in Amite, Mississippi, USA. Casandra was born about 1802 in Probably Mississippi; died between 1880 and 1890 in Louisiana, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

1850 Census shows her as the head of household with her children William Henderson, Minerva, Narcissa and Alex. It also shows her owning 4 slaves.

1860 Census shows her living alone. It also shows her owning 6 slaves and 2 "slave houses" and her age is listed as 60.

1870 Census shows her living alone in Ward 8, Natchitoches Parish. Her age is listed as 62.

1880 Census shows her living with her daughter, Malissa and her husband,William Taylor. Her age is listed as 75 and the census indicates she is blind.
