THM relies on William of Jumieges who places three Rogers as ancestors
between William grandfather of Roger I and Gomeric the invader.
Roger I is stated by most authorities as being the first to use the
surname Montgomery or Montgomerie.
The later work by BGM has Roger I as the father of Roger II with Hugo as a
brother, not father, of Roger II.
According to BGM, Roger I refused to recognize William the Bastard (later the Conqueror) as the legitimate heir to the throne. He and his sons Hugo and Robert organized the opposition against Duke William. In the end, Roger I had to surrender. He was banished from the country and went to France, where he was well received by Henry I. Roger died in Paris about 1040.
Roger I de Montgomery, who was the first to use the surname of
Montgomery, was called one of the most powerful Norman Barons at the
end of the tenth century. He died in Paris about 1040 A.D. He
married Josceline, daughter of Senfrie, sister of the wife of
Richard I. His sons were Hugo, who died before 1050, Robert and
William who both also died before 1050, Gilbert who was poisoned by
his sister-in-law, Mabilede Belleme in 1063 A.D. and our ancestor,
Roger de Montgomery II, Earl of Arundel and Shrewsbury.
