  REF:HISTORY AND ORIGINS OF THE MONTGOMERYS BY B.G. MONTGOMERY Lady Margaret married Robert first Earl of Winton, Lord Seton. The families of Eglinton and Winton arranged that Alexander, their third son, should enherit the Earldom of Eglinton. A Crown Charter dated 28th November 1611 transferred the Earldom of Eglinton to the Seton family. King James VI considered Alexander an usurper, however after pressure the King issued a Charter dated 24 March 1615, to give the matter an appearance of legality.
