Hugh earned a medical degree at Durham Unversity, and entered on the Medical Register for England on 9 July 1928. He assisted in a practice in Chester, but a dispute with the practioner resulted in him moving on. He did a voyage on a cargo boat to Yokohama. Then he practised in Aston Villa and Tickhill Yorkshire. In 1947 he emigrated to Canada with his sons, soon after divorcing Margaret, his first wife. After a couple of years of clinical medicine, he obtained an appointment as a public health officer with the Government of British Columbia for the Cariboo District.
He remained in the public health field for the remainder of his career, retiring as MOH for Stoney Plain, Alta. On retirement he finally settled in Blind Bay, BC, where he died in 1978 from complications resulting from aplastic anemia.
