Notes - Robert Montgomery of Brandrum is Dr. William Marsh's first choice as our ancestor, father of Alexander SR. He was obviously a poor farmer who had to lease his lands from the Cole's and Montgomery's. We know he had an older son named Alexander from lease of land belonging to his nephew, Alexander, son of John & Mary Montgomery.
Dr. Marsh believes as do most historians that the motivation to immigrate was strongest among the younger sons who were left with few opportunities under inheritance laws of Great Britain and Ireland. Later on, another of Robert's sons, also named Robert, did inherit lands of Thomas Montgomery's son Thomas in 1800, so the younger Robert's fortunes did improve.
Other people seem to choose Capt. Alexander Montgomery as the father of our emmigrant ancestor. It is rare that members of a successful family were likely to leave a life of luxury. Capt. Alexander was fairly wealthy, served in Sir John Bruce Hope's Regiment and he did have one son named James, maybe others. At this point you may take your pick!
In any event, our Alexander Montgomery born about 1720 in Ireland was a cousin of some degree to General Richard Montgomery, American hero of the Revolution. Quoting William Marsh: " There is good evidence that our ancestor, Alexander Montgomery, who arrived in America around 1750 was from the Montgomery family centered around County Mohaghan, Ireland.. . .Whether he was the son of the relatively poor Robert of Brandrum, or the son of the relatively wealthy Capt. Alexander Montgomery, who owned land in County Donegal and County Dublin, is unclear." Since no definitive proof is present, Dr. Marsh favors Robert Montgomery of Brandrum. P.S. Just because our Alexander and Sarah Lockwood did not name a son Robert to honor a grandfather, does not mean that our Alexander may not have had such a son in a first marriage to another woman. We have no proof that his first son John was even born in Connecticut nor that his mother was Sarah Lockwood.
