    • INFORMATION FROM EARLY SUBMISSIONS:
      CONFUSION RE: WIVES OF THIS ROBERT BECAUSE THERE WERE THREE COUSINS, ALL NAMED ROBERT MONTGOMERY, LIVING AT THE SAME TIME AND IN THE SAME LOCATION. THE REPORT MADE BY LINEAGES INC., DATED 22 SEPT 1986, PAGE 3, SIFTS THROUGH THIS CONFUSING DATA AND CONCLUDES THAT THIS ROBERT, SON OF JAMES, SON OF WILLIAM OF BRIGEND, MARRIED ELIZABETH VANCE ON 14 JUN 1757 AND WAS STILL MARRIED TO HER IN 1768. THE LINEAGES, INC. REPORT OF 22 SEPT 1986, PAGE 5, PRESENTS DATA SHOWING WHY THE ROBERT OF CUMBERLAND COULD NOT POSSIBLY BE THE SON OF WILLIAM 2, SON OF WILLIAM 1 OF BRIGEND. THE FACT THAT ONLY ONE ROBERT MONTGOMERY APPEARS IN IN HE 1778 TAX LIST FOR UPPER FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, MONMOUTH COUNTY, IS CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE THAT ROBERT OF CUMBERLAND COUNTY IS THE SON OF JAMES 2, SON OF WILLIAM 1 OF BRIGEND. ROBERT 2, SON OF WILLIAM 1 OF BRIGEND, DIED IN 1766. ROBERT 4 [JAMES 3 ROBERT 2 WILLIAM 1 OF BRIGEND} LIVED IN UPPER FREEHOLD ALL HIS LIFE AND IS OBVIOUSLY THE MAN IN THE 1778 TAX LIST; IT APPEARS PROBABLE THAT HE IS THE ROBERT OF CUMBERLAND.


      GENEALOGY FROM MARLENE KEITH KOUTOUFARIS:
      Montgomery family history compiled in 1940 states Robert died in 1797.

      It is believed that three other children -- Nancy, Sally, and Jean
      -- were by a second marriage to a Pheobe Husted; this marriage took
      place prior to 1790.

      Robert was a deputy to Provincial Congress from Monmouth County, New
      Jersey in 1775. (See page 168, Records of the Provincial Congress
      1775). His lands were a part of the Monmouth Battlefield. His house and
      goods were destroyed by the British. He moved to Fairfield Township,
      Cumberland County at the close of the Revolution.
