- Joseph Pryor. The following quotes are from "A Seed-bed of the Republic, The Early History of Southwest Virginia" by Robert Douthat Stoner. The Pryor Family entries were further arranged by Miss Katherine Reynolds of Houston, Texas, 1971. Prominent Citizens, JOSEPH PRYOR, having come from Hanover County into Botetourt, purchased lands on the south side of the James, adjoining Poague, in 1773. He promptly became active in the affairs of his community and on 11 May 1773, was granted a license for an ordinary at his home on James River. He was a lieutenant and a captain of the militia in the 1774-1780 period, and in 1792 was appointed inspector of the warehouse at Crows Ferry. He, John Pryor and Nicolas Pryor were also members of Capt. Mills Company of militia in 1783. In 1787, he acquired 400 acres of land on the head of Looney's Mill Creek.
