  He was a soldier in the Union Army in the Civil War,enlisted July 2, 1861 in the 24th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Was in the battles of Shilo, Fort Gibson, Chapin Mill. Wounded in left arm and shoulder, taken prisoner. Released, went to St. Louis, MO, then to Madison, IN and to Camp Chase, OH. Served on provost guard. Discharged May 28, l864.
