  • Notes
    • Information concerning Kidd Montgomery has been very sparse. Only recently did I discover through the 1870 U.S. Census records that Kidd's given name was Caswell P. and his age was 48 at the time of the census. His wife, Christina (Tener) Bowman- age 43(born 1827), son J. Orlando(Lando) - AGE 22, son McNeely - Age 17, daughter Liona - age 11, son Caswell P. Jr. - age 9, son Ciscero - Age 3, and son William Fountain - age 2 were also listed in this census. Courthouse and U.S. Census records have been checked in the counties of Floyd, Carroll, Wythe, and Montgomery but no record has been uncovered where Kidd Montgomery may have owned property. The one 1860 Census record indicates where James Montgomery resided with his son Caswell P. in Wythe County. Wythe County courthouse records state where a James Montgomery purchased 134 acres of land from a George and Polly Helms on November 11, 1807. The 1890 Census shows where Kidd and his wife Christina(Tener) were both living with their son, Caswell Jr. Kidd and his wife lived near Little Creek in the Indian Valley section of Floyd County, Virginia. The Floyd County Courthouse records show where Kidd's two sons, Caswell Jr. and McNelley purchased 61 acres of land from Thomas J. Phillips on June 20, 1878. It is believed this is where Kidd and his wife lived until his death. Family narratives state that Kidd Montgomery started what is now referred to as the Montgomery Cemetery in the Indian Valley section of Floyd County. Prior to his daughter Tishie's death, age of 12, she informed her father that she wanted to be buried upon a certain hill where she had spoken with God. Upon her death, Kidd, following his daughter's wishes and began what is now called the Montgomery Cemetery. Both Kidd and his wife, Tener, are buried in the same cemetery. Other family members who are also buried there include: son - McNeeley and his wife Victoria (Quesenberry) Montgomery; son - William Fountain; grandsons Roy and Bruce Montgomery (sons of McNeely and Victoria Montgomery); and William Phillips and wife Elizabeth Jane Montgomery (sister to Kidd.) There are numerous other graves with simple creek stones (no writing) located within the cemetery that have not been identified.
