    • Aunt Rose and Uncle Dick were among the first in the family to know that David Montgomery had a Jewish grandmother. On their first visit to Chicago after they were married, the other daughter-in-laws appeared to snub Rose Schumann for being Jewish. To this my grandfather responded to seeing her hurt saying, "Don't worry Rosie, my grandmother was one of your people!" However, no one knows why he never told the rest of his family any such thing. We were not to learn of it until 1955 when Uncle Dick after several visits to Toronto shared the information with me.

      Mother often talked about the Jewish children in the nieghborhood and how their families always wanted them to get a good education. She herself believed that we should emulate them in being obedient at school, seeing that we listened well and studied hard. She never believed that the "system" was at fault if one did not get a good education, but the child and the child's parents for not having the right attitude. To her "attitude" was all important!

      I only lately realize that if mother took singing lessons from Madam Schumann- Heink and in my mind I always wondered how she met such a famous teacher and why she would have taken mother (then married and with children) on as a student. It seems possible that she may have been a relative of Aunt Rose so that when she came to Chicago mother and she had an instant tie-in. I know mother always commented that Madam Schumann-Heink had many children but continued to be a famous concert singing. I have no idea how famous or if she was only famous to us because mother told us that.
