  • Notes
    • Taken from a letter from Arnold Kendrick Steward, 146 LMMI Dr., LaConner, WA 98257 Tel: (206) 466-3288. Dated 10 Aug 1994.

" It is interesting that both the Montgomery & Kendrick families came from Georgetown, NB and both families had members involved in running taverns. The Stewarts descendants of Mary Ann Montgomery were raised on Harsne's Islnad at the south end of the St. Clair River, near Alonac, MO/ They became mariners on the Great Lakes. My father was the last of 20 Stewarts who were Masters on vessels on the Lakes. At least three of the Kendricks were mariners and this may account for the Charlotte Agusta Kendrick of Toronto meeting Garrett Stewart who lived on Harsen's Island, MI."
It is interesting to note John, the older brother of Alexander Jr. was said to be commander of a 60 gun British Brig during the Revolution and the that Archibald Montgomery was aboard a ship at sea and later was was a Captain

of a British ship on Lake Ontario. Archibald returned to New York in 1792 with Alexander Montgomery Sr. Archibald died aboard his own ship when from a fever in Sacket's Bay, New York in 1810 or 1815? Alexander Sr. died at Archibald's home in Oswego, N.Y. earlier while visiting his son. His age not known. If he was born in Ireland abt. 1720-25 and died abt 1801, he was not very old.

John and Alexander Montgomery Jr. were bringing supplies back to York when they spotted the American forces under Gen. Pike headed for York. John jumped off the boat and walked to beat the Americans in order to warn the people in town. The Americans landed and there was a pitched battle. In setting off a munitions dump the Americans burned down the fort, killed Gen. Pike, their commander and burned down the entire town. One reason it is difficult to get our information on families is because that fire destroyed most records.
