- Hugh, who married Mary Gilbert the daughter of a Col.Thomas Gilbert, moved to Middlebury, Vermont abt 1792. From data sent by Mrs. Thomas (Nancy) High who is a descendant of his younger brother, DAvid Montgomery, we learn that Hugh had two sons. The first married and had a family, some of whom make up a large number of number of descendants living on the Atlantic coastline. Nancy said her information came from a George Montgomery who was descendant of Alexander III and Eliza Bruce. From this she got the idea that Archibald, Hugh and David, had been British privateers during the War of 1812. She gave the name of Archibald's two ships, The Black Snake and The Diana. All three sons seem to have died around that time. Several dates for Archibald's death aboard ship in Sackett's Harbor have been given. Some suggest he died abt 1810 while others say he died in the WAr of 1812. Hugh may have lived a short while after the war and David seems to disappear around 1814-15. Only if something is held in Vermont Archives can we learn more. >>>>>Upon recent receipt from Vermont Historical Society, learned that the Black Snake was active in Smuggling "Ash" from northern Vermont which probably went over to York, to make powder needed in defense against expected American attack. This was reason they built Fort York. In 1807, the Black Snake was captured by Vermont militia. Hugh served at Middlebury (like his father he must have realized that the best place to remain hidden was in enemy ranks). No Montgomerys were aboard ship when it was attacked and two men were killed. Three were put on trial for murder but the embargo was so unpopular that the men got short sentences and were soon pardoned. I am waiting to learn more from several sources to whom I have written in December of 1994.
Recent information send by Dr. David L. Montgomery of Summertown, Ont. regarding research he has done over several years on Montgomery line he found in Archives from Petitions and Grants from New Johnstown for land in Edwardsburg, (now Brockville Twp in Grenville County, Ontario. It put him in contact with a Laura G. Brown still living in Ontario who traces her line back to Hugh through his second son, Aaron C. Montgomery and Sarah Pratt. Aaron lived in Kitley Twp in 1820, in Ontario. She has a photograph with a family chart drawn on the reverse side which he copied and sent to me.
