  Mary Gilbert was daughter of Col. Thomas Gilbertwho had settled in Gagetown. Dr. David Marsh wrote that the couple moved to Middlebury, VT. Records show they were known there to have a son, Archibald Gilbert Montgomery, b. about 1794. Some report the birth of other children, some whose names are unknown. Their son, Aaron Cobdon is known from the Vermont residence. Later the family moved back to Canada, or planed eventually to live there. Hugh petitioned from New Johnston, Grenville Co. for land along the St. Lawrence River, west of Brokcville on 12 May 1798. Hugh may never have planned to remain in Vermont but he was enlisted in the Militia in Middlebury, Vt. in 1807.
