- Capt John Montgomery was commander of 60 Gun ship sailing from Cork when last heard of in family histories. However, the New Bruswick, Fredericton U.E.L. mentions that he did come to N.B. after the Revolution, followed his father to York (which I believe was confused with Alexander Jr. going to York with his Son, John. Then they say he followed his father back to New York state.
Is it possbile John went back down to Albany County in New York state and purchased land near Amsterdam, N.Y. which formerly owned by Sir John Johnson, perhaps he returned to settle in York with a family? It might be he is the same John & had son John who settled in Stormont-Roxborough. Presently this considered an entirely different family. Same with Thomas and confusion when he came in 1826 who had Tavern on Toronto's west side. Is it possible there was some relationship between these families. Could Alexander Montgomery SR. have been father to John Montgomery SR. We do not know where John was born but it may have been a first marriage for Alexander Sr. since John is not mentioned in Gershom Lockwood's will of the 9 May 1774. Five of Sarah Lockwood's children are named: Alexander Jr., Archibald, Hugh, Sarah and Hannah/Susannah). Alexander Sr. was made their guardian on 8 Oct. 1776. (The youngest were not named: Jane, Mary & David who were born later. Dr. Marshall and I have discussed possibility that John, the eldest may have been born early to a different wife (who died). Did Alexander come to the colonies earler than 1754, have a wife who died, leaving him with small son? What of the story that Alexander & Sarah Lockwood met and fell in love aboard ship? Had she gone to visit relatives in Northern Ireland or England and they met on the return voyage? We cannot know as all we have are several family tales that cannot be substaniated.
