  • Notes
    • Archibald was one of the two older sons of Alexander Sr. whom he hid out in the wilderness of upper New York in 1776 in order to keep them from being forced in to join the Continental army. He later got them up to the British lines where they joined to serve as Loyalists. After the defeat of Gen. Burgoyne by the Rebel forces in Fall of 1776, both were captured near Saratoga. They were marched, naked and freezing to be imprisoned in Poughkeepsie Gaol. Taken down to Pennsylvania they spent 18 months as prisoners before escaping. Alex SR. brought them food and clothing until they were free to join the British forces.

Archibald Montgomery who had served as a Lieutenant aboard a British ship during the American Revolution, first went to Canada after 1783 but then he returned to live in Oswego, New York. It's reported he served as a Captain on a British vessell during the War of 1812. Thought to have had no children with Susannah Purdy. Alexander Sr. during a visit to Oswego from Ellisburg, N. Y. died there about 1810. Archibald must have lived up to that date. Have name of two ships he commanded on Lake Ontario: Reported by Nancy High with data she recieved from George Montgomery (descended from Alexander III). Letter 7 Oct 1994: "My favorite person on the tree is Archibald Montgomery who was a privateer on Lake Ontario. You may already know about him, and I wish we could find out more. The history of that area,(then Onondaga County, NY) on U.S. side) between the Revolution and the War of 1812 is absolutely fascinating and he must have led and interesting life.. . .Archiblad's ships, the Diana and the Black Snake were in some way involved (in David, his younger brother's death or disappearance)" Nancy Montgomery also was able to learn the names of Archibald and Susannah Purdy's children (later verified by Dr. David L. Montgomery.
Since New York did not keep any birth records, David L. Montgomery obtained records of land petitions and children's birth records in Canada.
George Montgomery who is a descendant of Alexander Montgomery III & Eliza Bruce.
It may explains that George Montgomery was first who gave information used by Malcolm Sterns showing that Judah Myer, daughter of Benjamin Myer married Alexander Montgomery (Jr) in MYER V Chart in The Early Jewish Families in Colonial American. It shows them having only three children: Sarah, John, and Alexander III being listed on that chart.
Information as to "no" children of Archibald Montgomery and Susannah Purdy came from "The Loyalists in Ontario" by William D. Reid (pp237) Another source I have shows Betsey was born in 1814 not 1804 and being born up in Canada. Dr. Wm. Marsh in his book reports Archibald "died without issue." Upon checking other sources in Vermont:
Hope to get answers from the American achives. On Oct 18 & 21, 1994 wrote to the Sheldon Historical Museum, Middlebury, Vermont regarding two brothers, Hugh & David (Francis) and also to Vermont Historian at Montpelier, VT to whom I talked regarding same. Also wrote to Historians in Hudson,NY, Australitz, NY and two up in Oswego, N.Y. Hugh Montgomery served in the Militia of Middlebury, VT. where it was known many militia did not favor the embargo and were sympathetic to smugglers and privateers. There is the historical report of the attack against the smugglers aboard the Black Snake. Some of the smugglers of "ash" aboard the "Snake" were tried for the murder of several men who were killed during a skirmish to take the shp's crew.
