Notes - This is my first ancestor named Montgomery. John Montgomery was born, probably in PA about 1770 or 1771. He moved to Ohio, Probably Butler Co. when young;was married to Lydia Lucas in l796 in Shelby County, KY. They moved to Ohio, probably Greene County. The first 5 children were born there, including my ancestor Elijah. The next child, Spencer, was born in Kentucky 7-22-1810. The family went there for a brief time to settle an estate in the Lucas Family.
He came down the Ohio River in 1810, moving his goods on a flatboat to Clark Co.,IN or Floyd Co, IN.His family came through the wilderness on pack horse to their new home. Daughter Lydia born there in 1812. Supposed to be a Presbyterian but
must have become a Methodist as he named one of his sons John Wesley. He named another Spencer, may have been for Joseph Spencer. In 1813 he bought a farm from Phineas & Nancy Smith in Clark Co. IN. in 1821 bought another farm near Greenville Tws,Floyd Co.IN from John & Jean Watson. Moved to Lawrence Co.IN finally, where he lived many years. He operated a mill there. And died there.
He was a local preacher of that country in the Methodist Episcopal Church.
A cousin who lived in OK said he may also have been a doctor, that he owned a bleeding instrument made in England, which the cousin later possessed.
From the notes of A. H. Montgomery.
