      Oldest Montgomery ancestor submitted was Hugh Montgomerie, 3rd Earl of Eglinton, bn. abt 1460 in Ayrshire, Scotland.

      HUGH MONTGOMERY WAS EARL OF EGLINTON.

      ORIGINS AND HISTORY OF THE MONTGOMERYS by B. G de Montgomery, pub. 1970.

      Succeeded his father in 1483 as Third Lord Montgomery and First Earl of Eglinton, bestowed in January 1506 by James IV as a reward for his support.
      In 1484 he was one of the Commissioners who settled disputes on the marches. In October 1484, he revoked all grants made in his minority. He sided with the the great Barons in the quarrels with James III. When the latter was killed in the battle of Sauchieburn, the son became James IV, and showed great liberality to all his supporters. Montgomery received grants of land by Crown charters. In 1489 he was made a Privy Councillor, and in January 1506 was created Earl of Eglinton.

      In 1520 his eldest son, John, was killed in the streets of Edinburgh in a feud between the Earls of Arran and Angus.

      In 1526 Eglinton Castle was burned to the ground by the Cunninghams.

      In 1536 was appointed one of the Regents of Scotland, his highest and last official post.
