  • Notes 
    • NEIL MONTGOMERIE WAS SIR MONTGOMERIE OF LAINSHAW.

      Ancestor of various branches in America and one branch in France.
      Neil was granted Lainshaw by the first Earl of Eglinton. By an obligation dated 25th August 1531, Neil undertook the upkeep of the stronghold of Stewarton.
      Upon the death of his nephew, Hugh, the second Earl of Eglinton in Sept 1546, Neil took over the management of the Eglinton estates. By an agreement between him and the family, he was to act as temporary head until the third Earl reached the age of sixteen. The following year, Sir Neil was assassinated by Robert Lord Boyd and others. the Dowager Countess of Eglinton was thought to have been behind this murder, but she was aquited by the High Court of Justiciary.
