    • !Compelled by the unfortunate speculations of his father to earn his livlihood at an early age, he sailed from New York on several voyages as super cargo. In 1803, he moved to New Orleans at the time of the Louisiana Purchaase. His eldest two brothers Robert Rhea and Jonathon later joined him. Also some of the children of his youngest brother, David, later moved to New Orleans. He attained great influence and a large estate. He was president of the Branch Bank of the United States, and later was President of the Bank of Louisiana. During the war of 1812, he served as Quartermaster of the Fourth Regiment of the Louisiana Militia, and was in active service under General Jackson until after the British retreat.
