    • !Born in Philadelphia, he returned with his parents when eight years old to Monmouth County, NJ where he inherited a handsome estate. Although a Quaker, he became a Major in the New Jersey Line. Consequently he was disowned by the Meeting. After the war he invested considerable money in enterprises which were unsuccessful and lost much of his fortune.
