JAMES MONTGOMERY WAS IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR.
THE FAMILY ORIGINATED IN SCOTLAND. EARLY 1700'S TO NORTHERN IRELAND DUE TO RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION. FAMILY FIRST WENT TO PENNSYLVANIA, THEN AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA, THEN TO OLD PENDLETON DISTRICT, SOUTH CAROLINA.
JAMES SERVED IN MILITIA OF BURKE COUNTY, GEORGIA DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. HE WAS COMMISSIONED WITH THE RANK OF 2ND LIEUTENANT NOVEMBER 8, 1777 BY JOHN ADAM NEISLER (COMMISSION BOOK B PAGE 276 AT STATE CAPITOL, ATLANTA, GEORGIA). WAS IN THE SEIGE OF AUGUSTA. HE WAS A STAUNCH WHIG. IN 1786 HE APLIED FOR LAND GRANTS OF 575 AND 650 ACRES IN FRANKLIN COUNTY (LATER JACKSON COUNTY), GEORGIA. HE IS LISTED AMONG THE EARLY SETTLERS (EARLY 1787) ON PAGE 19 OF FRARY ELRODS "HISTORICAL NOTES ON JACKSON COUNTY, GEORGIA". HE WAS FIRST AT TUMBLING SHOALS.
LATER MOVED TO WHERE CABIN CREEK CHURCH NOW STANDS AND BUILT THE FIRST CABIN IN EARLY. (EARLY HISTORY OF JACKSON COUNTY BY GJN WILSON).
HE WAS IN THE FRONT RANK OF WARS WITH THE INDIANS AND WAS BADLY WOUNDED. DREW LOT 255 WILKINSON COUNTY IN THE 1805 GEORGIA LAND LOTTERY.

Joined the Burke Co. Militia and fought with that company during the Revolutionary War. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on Nov.8, 1777 by John Adams Neisler, Esq. Proof is found in Commission Book B, Page 276 at the Capital in Atlanta GA. In 1786 he received a land grant in Franklin Co. GA and moved there soon after. Frequent mention is made of him in Wilson's "History of Jackson County, Georgia" which can be found in the Atlanta Public Library and in the Georgia State Archives. He died in Jackson County, GA several years before it was formed from Franklin Co. He is buried on his home place, which is now owned by Mr. Twitty.

On pages 15 - 20 of his book, "The Descendants of Hugh Montgomery, Sr. and Some Related Families" published in 1976, D.C. Montgomery, Jr. builds a strong case using unproven and circumstantial evidence to show that this James Montgomery was the son of Hugh Montgomery, Sr. of the Waxhaws community in South Carolina. On page 31, which begins the chapter devoted to this James Montgomery and his descendants, Mr. Montgomery begins with this statement: "James Montgomery, the eldest son of Hugh Montgomery, Sr., was born in 1747..." However, as stated earlier, there is no documented proof of this relationship, just a supposition with some strong circumstantial evidence.

BIOGRAPHY: From "The Descendants of Hugh Montgomery, Sr. and Some Related Families" published in 1976 by D.C. Montgomery, Jr. -
PP. 15-16:
"...Finally there is the mystery of James Montgomery, his son Hugh, and their relationship to Hugh, Sr. Major John Barkley and his wife Agnes had ten children of whom we have record, four sons and six daughters. Three of these daughters married Montgomerys.
1. Margaret Barkley (1768-1848) married Hugh Montgomery (1767-1852)
2. Agnes (Nancy) Barkley married William Montgomery
3. Mary Ann Barkley married Joseph Montgomery
William and Joseph were sons of Hugh, Sr. William was also the father of A.B. Montgomery, who has said that "a nephew of my father" named Hugh Montgomery married his mother's sister. If this statement is correct, then there can be no doubt that James Montgomery, the father of Hugh, was a brother of William and a son of Hugh, Sr.
We know, of course, that Hugh, Sr. had a son named James, but the only other definite record we have of James is that "he married and moved to west Tennessee; he had one son named James, who married and had a large family" (A.B. Montgomery.) Such a statement, however, should not necessarily preclude the possibility that he had other sons as well.
From some other sources, such as the book "Notable Southern Families" and D.A.R. lineage records, we find that one James Montgomery was supposed to have been born in 1740, removed to Calhoun Co., Tenn. around the close of the eighteenth century and died in Jackson Co., Ga. in 1808. He had four sons and five daughters of whom there is record. Sons were John, Hugh (1767-1852), James McConnell (1770-1842) and William (b.1783). Hugh married Margaret Barkley, moved to Jackson Co., Tenn. in 1796, and finally to Chattooga Co., Ga. in 1825. None of this information conflicts with the statements made by A.B. Montgomery above, with the single exception of James having been born in 1740, which would make it difficult for him to have been a son of Hugh, Sr.
With regard to this last statement, it is also of interest to note that we have definite record of a James Montgomery who was born in 1740, lived in Chester Co., S.C., at one time, and moved in 1801 to Gaston Co., N.C. where he died in 1829....James and James Jr. (his son) are buried near Kings Mountain, N.C. It is probable that the birth date of this James was mistakenly seized upon for that of James, the son of Hugh, Sr., who quite likely was actually born around 1747.
Actually, the date of birth of our James Montgomery, son of Hugh, Sr., is the real crux of the matter. The census of Lancaster Co., S.C., in 1790 lists three heads of families by the name of James Montgomery. In the order of listing, the James closest to the other known sons of Hugh, Sr. had a family of nine. This would undoubtedly be the father of the Hugh who married Margaret Barkley, since he had a wife and eight living children at that time. If this James is the son of Hugh, Sr. (who we assumed was born around 1727), then he could not have been born much earlier than 1746. Also, because his son, Hugh, was born in 1767, he could not have been born much later than 1748. For practical purposes in the development of this hypothesis, we will assume that James was born in 1747."

"All this, of course, would mean that John was not the first-born son of Hugh, Sr. John was born either in the latter four months of 1752 or the first eight months of 1753. In reality, there was never any valid reason to assume that John was the eldest son. It would be a definite mistake to assume that the brothers were listed in the order of their birth in the record given us by A.B. Montgomery. The fact that John remained in South Carolina does not necessarily imply that he was the eldest son. Finally, we have adequate reason to suspect that not only James, but Robert as well was older than John. We do know that Robert had a son Josiah born in 1752. If Robert was born after John, in 1754 or 1755, then he would have been only 17 or 18 years old when Josiah was born. And if we followed the listing as given by A.B. Montgomery, he would have been born about 1758, which is manifestly impossible. In fact, at this time I would like to offer the following chronological list of births for the children of Hugh, Sr., which I believe to be at least more logical than any heretofore submitted:
Hugh Montgomery, Sr., born 1727. Children:
1. James, born ca 1747 (son Hugh born 1767)
2. Robert, born ca 1750 (son Josiah born 1772)
3. John, born 1753 (son John born 1775)
4. Hugh, born 1755 (daughter Isabella born 1780)
5. William, born ca 1757 (married in 1786)
6. Alexander, born ca 1760 (to Miss. in 1789)
7. Mary, born 1762 (married in 1783)
8. Samuel, born 1764 (married 1784)
9. Joseph, born 1766 (married 1789)
10. Mary Ann, born 1767 (son Jonothan born 1794)
In support of this theory, it may first be noted that since John was married at the age of 20 and Samuel at the age of 19, then it is not unreasonable to assume that James married young also, and if his son Hugh was his first child as seems likely, then James could easily have been born in 1747. Secondly, according to the proposed table above, the dates of birth of the ten children of Hugh, Sr. would encompass a period of twenty years, which is certainly more logical than attempting to compress them into a period of 14 years (1753-1767), and even more logical if we pause to consider the high infant mortality in those days. It seems highly improbable that Hugh, Sr. did not have some children during this time who died in infancy or childhood.... "

" Some additional evidence that this James was the son of our Hugh, Sr. lies in the fact that he did have a son named James (James McConnell), plus the fact that James and Susannah sold land on Camp Creek in 1800 after moving to Calhoun Co., Tenn. a few years previously. This is in agreement with the statement by A.B. Montgomery to the effect that James "married and moved to west Tennessee....had one son named James."
Pg. 31:
" James Montgomery, the eldest son of Hugh Montgomery, Sr., was born about 1747. According to A.B. Montgomery, he became married, had a son named James, and settled in west Tennessee. We now know that he first married Elizabeth McConnell, by whom he had three sons. Around the close of the eighteenth century he removed to Calhoun Co., Tenn. His second wife was Susannah Strange, by whom he had six more children. He died January 1, 1808 in Jackson Co., Ga. Susannah died October 8, 1804..."
Birth Date might be 1747, probably an error in DC Montgomery's book, also with confusion is he a brother or a son of Hugh
