- !BIRTH-MARRIAGE-DEATH: "Thomas Powell..." At about age 25 he started thestudy
of medicine under the watchful eye of his near relative Dr. WillisWillingham.
He graduated from the GA Medical College, Augusta in 1848. He attended
Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and in 1850 received his diploma.After
he completed his studies he settled at Harmony Grove, Jackson, GA. Heboarded
with S.M. Shankle until his marriage. Dr. Hardman was appointed surgeon to
administer to the suffering humanity in his district and the surrounding
country during the war (1861-1865). Therefore he was exempt from actualservice.
He contributed material aid and supplies to the soldiers. He practiced for
nearly 30 years and then his son, L.G. who had received his diploma as a
physician, became established in his practice. "Old Doctor" began givingup his
practice and became a preacher. He had converted in 1846 and was baptizedat
Clouds Creek Baptist Church in Oglethorpe in 1848 by pastor Peter Patrick
Butler. Later a baptist church was established at Harmony Grove. "Old
Doctor" was ordained Sunday 22 Nov 1874 at the age of 52, as pastor of the
new church. By 1878 he had turned over all his medical practice to his son
Dr. Lam and devoted all his time to preaching and doing the work of thelord.
He was very active and preached at a number of churches in the area. His
ministry covered a period of nearly 30 years. The last 5 years of hislife he
retired yet continued to preach within months of his death. (The familywere
patrons of the Baptist Church at Black's Creek at the time of Henry'sbirth.)
"Old Doctor" was of medium height and size - 5'10" and abt 150 pounds. Hehad
gray eyes, dark hair, becoming gray at 60 years. He had a dark complexionand
had little resemblance to his father, Elbert, who was 6'2" muscular andlight
complexion. He actually seemed to take after the Barnett side. His motherwas
short about 5'4" rather fleshy and with dark hair and complexion.
