Lammie.. He received only a common school education because of the war. He
began the study of medicine at age 17 and after completing studies atAugusta
Medical College in 1875, he practiced with his father for about 2 years.After
working with his father, he attended Bellvue in NY City. He tookpost-graduate
work at Bellvue, also at the University of PA and the NY PolyclinicHospital.
He became interested in surgery in the 80's and was one of the 1st tooperate
for appendicitis in 1890.
He took an active role in civic and business pursuits. Hr is listed ashaving
founded the Northeastern Banking Co. of Commerce in 1892, which he headedas
its only president for 45 years. It was through his efforts that the 1stoil
mill of the area was put into operation, an enterprise which he headed and
operated under the name Hardman Oil Co. and Ginnery. For 40 yrs he was
president of the Harmony Grove Cotton Mills, serving in this capacity inthe
Hardman Flour Mills and also associated with the Hardman Hardware Co. of
Commerce. He was a director of the First National Bank of Commerce,president
of the Hardman Drug Co., president of the Commerce Telephone Co.,president of
the Hurricane Shoals and Nacoochee Power Co. His extensive agricultural
interest, as well as peach and apple orchards, totaled some 10,000 acresand
were situated in White, Jackson, Madison, Habersham and Lowndes Countiesin GA,
and additional property in Florida.
He established various memorial funds for the benefit of school andchurches.
One of his special gifts was to the Library of Mercer University toremodel the
building as a memorial to his mother and father.
He was the Governor of Ga from 1927-31
He and his wife are buried in Grey Hill Cemetery in Commerce GA
