- !BIRTH-MARRIAGE-DEATH: "Thomas Powell..." from Valdosta. She was veryactive
and prominent socially. She was a member of the DAR and the UnitedDaughters of
the Confederacy. Sharing her husband's interest in educational mattersshe held
the honor and distinction of being the first and only woman who everserved as
a member of the Board of Trustees for Mercer College. She was a trusteeand
vice-president of the Tallulah Falls Industrial School and a member of the
Board of Education in Commerce. As a leader in women's activitiesthroughout
the state she was an active member of the Georgia Federated Woman'sClubs. She
was also chairman of the Shorter Serepta Loan Fund established by Dr.Hardman
to enable girls to enjoy the privilege of a higher education.
