Cemetery in Elmira NY. He is listed on Co "Rool" Co. J 18th SC Infantryas
private. he enlisted Dec 19, 1863 at the age of 38. Captured Jul 30 1864at
Petersburg VA. Eight months later he died of cronic diarrhea.
Company history..The 18th SC regiment was a part of Elliott's Brigade,
commanded by Brig. Gen. Stephen A. Elliott. Elliott's Brigade was a partof
Johnson's Division, commanded by Major Gen. B.R. Johnson. On July 301864, a
group of PA coal miners, turned Union soldiers placed a chargee f 12,000lbs of
black powder in a tunnel, which they had dug under a hill occupied by SC
sldiers. During the fighting and as a result of the explosion, 43soldiers were
killed, 43 were wounded and 76 were missing and presumed captured(soldiers
from the 18th SC Regiment ).
