- !BIRTH: born in the Palace of Wantage. At an early age he accompanied his
father to Rome. He resided there during a period of some length, and was
doubtless instructed in the languages, in poetry and music. When he became
King, he built ships to prevent others from attacking from the sea side.
This was the beginning of the British Navy. He organized the militia,compiled
a code of laws, built schools and monasteries. Alfred spent his leisuremoments
in writing and translating history, religious and philosophical book from
Latin to English
