(c1729-1778) and others who share these surnames" compiled by Robert Dean

"The earliest known record of either Peter, or his wife, is their"Intention
of Marriage" which was recorded in the town clerk's office in Attleboro,MA on
18 Jun 1757.... Peter and his son, Peter, Jr., were two of nine men from
Fitzwilliam who joined Capt.Samuel Blodet's 119 man Company of Col. Nathan
Hale's Second New Hampshire Regiment as privates to serve three yearhitches
during the Revolutionary War. Peter, Sr. enlisted on 10 Mar 1776,deserted on 7
Feb 1777 from cap near Ludon's Ferry, NH but returned with Peter, Jr. on18 Mar
1777 where they each signed up for three year hitches. They were eachpaid 2
lbs. per month for their service. On 10 May 1777, while camped atWalpole, NH,
Peter, Sr. gave his age as 48 years. Early on the morning of 7 Jul 1777,Hale's
Second New Hampshire Regiment was surprised and engaged near Hubbardton,VT by
British troops under the command of Gen. John Burgoyne. Hale was defeatedand
his men scattered with many being captured. Peter, Sr. was among themissing
and was listed as a deserter until he returned 19 Oct 1777, satisfactorily
explained his absence, and was pardoned. It is impossible to tell ifPeter was
present for each of these battles but his regiment was engaged in theSiege of
Boston, the Defense of Canade, Lake Chapllain, Trenton-Princeton, andSaratoga.
When Col. Reid took command of this unit, both Peter Burbees weretransferred
to "the southern army" (Third New Hampshire Regiment) where they spent the
winter of 1777-78 with Gen. George Washington at Valley Forge, PA. Intheir
forces in New York so he decided to engage those under the command of SirHenry
Clinton in New Jersey. Washington moved his 11,000 man force toPhiladelphia,
PA and made preparations to cross the Delaware River into New Jersey butPeter
Burbee, Sr. died just ten days before that now famous river crossing wasmade.
His regiment then continued on to "Camp Castle" where his name wasofficially
entered into the records dated 22 Jul 1778 as being "dec'd June 12th". His
widow, Marget, was married second on 29 Apr 1784 at Fitzwilliam, NH toJames
