      Member of Co. E, 63 Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry, C.S.A. He was a
      private December 11, 1862. Appointed 4th Corporal December 30, 1862; 1st
      Corporal Mar. or Apr. 1863; 5th Seregant July or August 1863.Surrendered and
      paroled at Meridian, Mississippi on May 12, 1865.

      Company E, 63rd Georgia Regiment
      Initially stationed at Thunderbolt, south of Savannah, at a fortguarding the
      river enterance to that city. Units there were both infantry andartillery.
      Transferred with most of his regiment to Dalton, Georgia in May, 1864and
      fought in the Atlanta Campaign against Sherman. The regiment wasparticulary
      distinguished at the battle of Kennesaw Mountain in hand to hand fightingand
      was complimented in general orders.
      Served in Gereral Hardee's Corps in the Battle of Atlanta and was severely
      wounded on July 22, 1864 when a shell exploded near his face, causingblindness
      in his left eye and deafness in his left ear. (The famous Cycloramapainting
      in Atlanta depicts the fierce fighting on that day.) He was evuated to a
      hospital at Citronelle, Alabama and was surrendered there on May 4, 1865and
      paroled at Meridan, Mississippi on May 12, 1865.
