There are several court records in Randolph county, MO that mention thatJames
may have been retarded. His guardian was changed. According to ProbateRecord
Vol A 1829-1847: 1840 James Montgomery was a lunatic lately removed from
Caswell County NC. Thomas Gunn appointed guardian. 25 Feb 1845 MichaelGunn
guardian of James Montgomery. Tuesday 20 Feb 1847 The heirs of Alexander
Montgomery, dec'd, filed their relinguishment of a right to administer onthe
estate of said dec'd & recommended Michael Gunn as admin. Tues 29 May1849
Michael Gunn died 1848 & Thomas Gunn appt. adm. of estate to completeAlexander
Montgomery's estate also of the estate of Michael Gunn. The Courtappointed
Thomas Gunn, guardian for James Montgomery, as person of unsound mind inthe
place of John Kitchens, dec'd. 25 Jun 1849 Thomas Gunn is appointedadmr. of
the estate of John Kitchen.
