      !BIOGRAPHY:
This is a summary of the family of JACOB ARCHIBALD MONTGOMERY, one of the three MONTGOMERY families who settled in Dade County, Missouri, during the middle of the 1800s. Written by Alice B. (Power) Strock, CMS 762.

Charles A. Hanna in his book, "The Scotch-Irish", writes in his chapter on the "Families of Scotland," p.433, that the Montgomerys were inhabitants of Renfrewshire and Ayshire(sp.) before 1200 A.D. and that they held the Earldom of Eglinton and the Lordship of Montgomery. They are reputed to be of Norman origin.

William D. Stewart's "Gone to Georgia" (pgs 11-37), lists a Jacob Montgomery among the South Carolina Montgomerys whose names appear on the 1805 Jackson Lottery List.

There is a record among the tax lists in the Tennessee State Library that Jacob Montgomery paid taxes in Tennessee for 1807 (p.166) in Williamson County. The amount of land is not given.

Maury County Tax Lists (Roll #473) records Jacob Montgomery paying tax in 1811 on 600 acres lying on Fountain Creek. From 1812 through 1823 he paid taxes at the same location but on only 150 acres. In 1812, 1814, 1819, and 1823 he sold varying amounts of land in Maury County, Tennessee. In 1821 he received five land grants in Maury County, Tennessee, totaling 303 acres (DB 3:50, 51, 52, 53, 54.) In 1823 he received a grant for 10 acres in Maury County, Tennessee (G V:335.) On July 28, 1830 he received a grant for 16 7/8 acres in Carroll County, Tennessee. In 1823 he sold 58 acres of land to Michael Fry (DB L:342.) Jacob A. Montgomery and his family are listed in the 1830 Census of Carroll County, TN.

In 1838 Jacob Montgomery is listed as having bought 80 acres of land in St. Clair District, Rives County (later Henry), Missouri. He sold this in January 1841.

In April 1841 he bought 165.59 acres in Dade County, Missouri. This was located in the SW 1/2 of Sec. 7, Twp. 31, Range 26. He lived in Dade County the rest of his life.

On May 29, 1811 in Maury County, Tennessee, he married Rachel Ann (Patterson) Gardner who was born between 1780 and 1790 in Tennessee. She is included in the 1841 Census of Rives County, Missouri. She died on October 19, 1846 in Greenfield, Dade County, Missouri, and is buried in the Weir Cemetery. Her first marriage was to Patton Gardner in Tennessee. They had one son, Patton Patterson Gardner.

On June 4, 1842 Jacob and Rachel Montgomery appear as charter members on the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Roll (History of Dade County and Her People, I:129.) Jacob was one of the first elders of this church which was organized on that date, a position he held throughout his life. In 1850 he is listed in the Dade County, Missouri Census with three sons and a daughter at home.

Jacob Archibald Montgomery (the Archibald is usually omitted) died on June 9, 1857 in Greenfield, Dade County, Missouri, and is buried in the Weir Cemetery. At the time of his death he was 79 years, 5 months and 17 days old. This established his birth on December 23, 1777. The 1850 Census of Dade County gives his birth state as being South Carolina.

JACOB and RACHEL MONTGOMERY had ten children: JOHN MILTON MONTGOMERY, 1812-1872; ANNETTE AMANDA MONTGOMERY, 1815-1855; MARGARET DAMARIS MONTGOMERY, 1817- after 1860; NANCY SAPHRONIA MONTGOMERY, 1819-1849; JANE RANKIN MONTGOMERY, the author's ancestor, 1821-1863; MARY LARONIA MONTGOMERY, 1823-1849; JOSIAH CHALMERS MONTGOMERY, 1824-1864; CALVIN LAFAYETTE MONTGOMERY, b. 1826; LAFAYETTE DWIGHT MONTGOMERY, b. 1829; and RACHEL ANN MONTGOMERY, JR. All of the children were born in Tennessee.

      I. JOHN MILTON MONTGOMERY, the eldest child, was born in *Hardiman County, Tennessee, on December 22, 1812. He died on December 27, 1872 in Dade County, Missouri, and is buried in the Weir Cemetery. On November 4, 1834 he was married in *Hardiman County, Tennessee to MARY JANE WHITE who was born on April 7, 1818 in Mississippi (dau. Cloy's death certificate.) Mary Jane died on May 8, 1884 at the age of 66 years, one month and one day. Mary Jane (White) Montgomery is also buried in the Weir Cemetery. John Milton and Mary Jane had five children: PLEASANT LAFAYETTE, MARTHA S., TEMPLE E., MARY ELIZABETH, and LAURA LUELLA, according to the 1860 Census, Dade County, Missouri (p. 44.)

PLEASANT LAFAYETTE MONTGOMERY was born in *Hardiman County, Tennessee, on August 24, 1835 in Dade County, Missouri. He married Josephine Hill who was born in Illinois in 1843. Pleasant died in Dade County, Missouri, in 1923. Uncle Plez and Aunt Jo had three children: JESSIE, b. 1873, Illinois; ANNA CLOY, b. 1875, Missouri; and MARY L., b. 1876, Missouri.

MARTHA (MATTIE) MONTGOMERY, second child of JOHN MILTON and MARY JANE MONTGOMERY, was born in Dade County, Missouri. She married a Mr. DILLON.

MARY ELIZABETH, their third (child), was born in Dade County, Missouri. She married WILLIAM BAILEY.

Their fourth child was ELLIOTT, who moved to Texas as a young man. (Editor's note: This must be the TEMPLE E. mentioned above.)

The fifth child, LAURA LOUELLA (Ed.note: Spelled LUELLA above.) was born May 9, 1859. She married a Mr. Gardiner and moved to California where they remained. No children are known.

II. ANNETTE AMANDA MONTGOMERY was born in *Hardiman County, Tennessee, on January 2, 1815 and died in Dade County, Missouri, on May 10, 1855. On June 22, 1850 she became the second wife of CHARLES FLOYD HARDWICK, b. 1813. They had three children, ALBERT BARNETT HARDWICK, b. September 15, 1851; ELIZABETH ANN HARDWICK, b. December 23, 1853; and WILLIAM LUTHER HARDWICK, b. March 12, 1855 and d. September 24, 1855. All of their children were born in Dade County, Missouri.

III. MARGARET DAMARIS MONTGOMERY was born in Tennessee in 1817 and died after 1860. She married WILLIAM W. The Rankins appear in the 1870 and 1880 Census of Dade County, Missouri. It is believed that this set of Rankins went to Rankin, Kansas.

IV. NANCY SAPHRONIA MONTGOMERY married first in Henry County, Missouri, to GEORGE S. DAVIDSON on July 19, 1838 (Henry County, Missouri, Marriage Records, 1835-1861.) She married TEMPLE ELLIOTT BELL on April 14, 1845 in Dade County, Missouri, as his second wife. She died on April 5, 1849 in Dade County, Missouri. On April 3, 1863 she married WILLIAM WASHINGTON HOLLAND in Greenfield, Missouri, as his second wife. She married WILLAM THEOBOLD about 1840, probably in Henry County, Missouri, as her parents were living there at that time. Their children were RACHEL J. THEOBOLD, MARGARET A. THEOBOLD, b. April 3, 1841, d. December 12, 1895. MARGARET never married. She is buried in the Weir Cemetery. Also born to WILLIAM and MARY THEOBOLD were WILLIAM H. THEOBOLD, VICTORIA J. THEOBOLD, AND SANFORD A. THEOBOLD (1860 Census, Dade County, MO, Center Twp., p.44.) The family appears in three consecutive censuses -- 1850, 1860 1870 -- in Dade County, Missouri. They then disappear from this locality.

VII. JOSIAH CHALMERS MONTGOMERY was born in 1824 in Tennessee and came with his parents to Missouri. He married and had two children in Missouri. His wife died and he left the children with relatives and went to Knights Ferry, California where he died in 1864.
