- GENEALOGY SUBMITTED BY GRADEN LEANDER MONTGOMERY, CMS 764, on 25 Mar. 1988.
BIRTH: Birth date changed from 24 Dec 1815 to 24 Feb 1815 and place (Virginia) added based on email and text document from William Montgomery, son of Graden L. Montgomery (CMS #764) dated 7 July 1999.
BURIAL: Burial was in Anglin Cemetery, Hopewell, Kentucky per email and text document from William Montgomery, Son of Graden L. Montgomery (CMS$ 764) dated 7 July 1999.
BIOGRAPHY: Submitted by Graden L. Montgomery, CMS 764, on 25 Mar 1988.
BIOGRAPHY: Believed, but not proven: Parents of James Montgomery were Robert Montgomery, who married Sarah Skidmore in 1796.
BIOGRAPHY: Family legend is that James Montgomery and a brother (either John or Robert) stowed away on a ship from Ireland. I believe that this Robert Montgomery (born ca 1764; married Sarah Skidmore) was probably a younger son of John Montgomery (born in Donegal, Ireland about 1717-1725 period and came to US in 1733 with family.) John's father was a James Montgomery from Donegal, Ireland (believed to be the James of the stowaway legend.) They came to Lancaster Co., PA (1733), then with family to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia about 1746 where James Montgomery (the father) died a few years later (1756.) His widow, Anne, returned with part of the family to Pennsylvania, but several sons remained in Virginia, including Robert, Samuel, John, etc.
BIOGRAPHY: I suspect the stowaway part of the legend to be doubtful. I believe the family came as a unit (father James, mother Anne and their large family) together with other families from Donegal, Ireland. James' sister, Catherine, was married to a Patrick Colhoun (Calhoun?) who came at the same time it is believed.
BIOGRAPHY: I (Graden L. Montgomery) need help verifying whether I have made the correct connection (whether I have the correct father) of James Montgomery, born 12/24/1815, as Robert Montgomery and whether he was in fact John Montgomery's son and born in 1764. Problem is all the Montgomerys named sons with the same names.

From email and text document submitted by William Montgomery, son of Graden L. Montgomery (CMS# 764):
James Montgomery apparently lived in Smyth Co., Virginia when his children were born, but moved to Washington Co. before the 1850 Census....and was living there when the 1860 Census was taken. He and Lucretia apparently moved to Greenup Co., Kentucky (Oldtown, Hopewell and Crane Creek locations) with son (Thomas K.) in 1873, and (he) later died there in 1879.
