ADDENDA I (PAGE 90): Robert Scott Jones, 67th Regiment, IndianaVolunteers

      Gene Montgomery,10927 Seibel Lane, Montgomery, TX 77356, (936) 582-4569
a cousin of ours from Montgomery., Texas, has provided additional
information about the Civil War service record of Robert Scott Jones, the first husband of Saloma
Montgomery(1829-1897.) A Gorrell family history noted that Robert haddied at Andersonville
Prison, but Gene discovered that that part of the story was not correct. The whole story of
Robert Scott Jones follows, in Gene's words:

"Robert Scott Jones, age 35, enlisted at Madison, Indiana on August20, 1862 as a Private
in Captain Applewhite's Company, 67th Reg't., Ind. Vol. far a period 3years and received a
bounty of $25..00 of the $100 due him. This organization subsequentlybecame Company K,
      67th Reg't. Ind. Vol.

"On September 17, 1862, he was paroled at Mumfordsville, Kentucky whenhis whole regiment
was captured. (Ed. Note: Confederate General Braxton Bragg accepted thesurrender of the
Mumfordsville garrison as the Union commander, Colonel John Wilder, relinquished control of
the city.) The regiment returned to Indiana and was re-established. Hewas wounded at
Vicksburg on May 22, 1863 and was sent north to convalesce. On October2, 1863 he was
reported absent sick at Carillon, Louisiana.

" In January 1864 he was sent to New Orleans to a convalescent camp dueto illness. He was
then assigned as a cook in the camp where he remained until transferredto Fort Gains, Alabama.
He died at the General Hospital, Fort Gains on August 25, 1864 of ChronicDiarrhea.

"Private Jones left a wife, Saloma Montgomery Jones; Mary ElizabethJones age 12 on 5
March 1865; William Alexander Jones age 9 on 12 July 1864; and BenjaminJones, age 3 on $
      July 1864.

"Pension number 49981 granted Saloma $8.00 per month and $2.00 foreach child. Saloma
remarried on April 9, 1868 to James Burch and gave up her pension.

"The above is fully documented from the National Archives. I canhonestly say that the
report of Robert Scott Jones being a prisoner at Andersonville is inerror. It probably resulted
in confusion in his being captured at Mumfordsvilie.

"I presume that he enlisted in the Army as an economic move since hereceived a bounty
of $100 plus $15 a month as a private. Jones was 5' 10" in height (tallerfor the times) , was of
a dark complexion, had blue eyes and dark hair. His occupation was listedas a farmer.

Someone, perhaps his father, had his remains returned to Indiana, theNew Washington
cemetery in Clark County. The gravestone is completely inaccurate andsteps are being taken
to have the Veterans Affairs provide the proper marker."
