  • Notes
    • The 1870 Census of Floyd County, Virginia states McNeely's age at 17 years. This would mean his birth year is 1853 - not 1855 as stated on his tomb stone.

      McNeely (15 June 1855 - 10 July 1921 -- tombstone) first married a Miss Meta Spence (31 July 1869 - 5 October 1855), daughter of Jeremiah Davis Spence (1 October 1833 - 17 July 1864) and Margaret Jane Jackson (20 August 1837 - 6 September 1906).
Jermiah and Margaret married on 18 September 1855 in Carroll County, Virginia. McNeely and Metta married in Carroll County on Sunday, 1 February 1885. No children were born of this union.
Metta Spence Montgomery died of diptheria.

McNeely married a second time to Sarah Victoria Quesenberry (25 June 1872 - 10 April 1945) on 26 December 1888, Floyd County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Robert and Sarah P.
Quesenberry. In the early years of their marriage they lived along the Roanoke River in Montgomery County, Virginia. Upon returning to Floyd County they rented a house on what was then the Showalter farm. From there they bought a farm in the same area and operated not only the farm but a pulp wood sawmill as well.
McNeely sold railroad ties to the Norfolk and Western Railroad in Radford, Virginia.

McNeely and Victoria owned a total of 511 acres of land.
The Floyd County Courthouse records show where McNeely purchased 220 acres of land from J. L. Montgomery (D.B. 39, page 66) for the price of $4,400.00. This land was located near Laurel Creek adjoining lands owned by Sherman Hollandsworth, John Duncan, and a Mr. Young.
This land was possibly purchased for its timber which would reasonably explain the alrge expense for such property at that time. The records also show where two other pieces of property were purchased: (1) 61 acres of land purchased by Caswell P. Montgomery, Jr. and McNeely Montgomery from Thomas J. Phillips on 20 June 1878 (D.B. P, page 230) for $600.00; and (2) 130 acres of land purchased by McNeely Montgomery from J. B. Quesenberry on 23 June 1890 (D.B. V, page 236) for the amount of $81.25. This land belonged to their son, William Quesenberry, deceased.

As all farm families were very much self-sufficient and grew most of whaty they need, McNeely and Victoria were no expections. They earned a living for themselves and their family by whatever means were available at any particular time. They raised vegetable produce for their family use, as well as selling it by the bushels. From their sheep were made woolen blankets (the wool was sent into Floyd for making into blanekts); chickens and eggs were sold to local stores and travelling panhandlers.
They raised their own milk cows, made their own butter, etc. and raised their own pork. They also had horses and mules for use on the farm and sawmill. From stories told to me by my Father and other relatives, my grandparents usually had 10-12 male workers who helped out on the farm and sawmill. About every meal my Grandmother prepared was done so in large quantities to feed not only her own family but also hired help and any visitors as well. Their house constantly had people visiting.

My Grandmother and her daughters not only canned and preserved their winter food supplies but also quilted and made many of their own clothes. Several quilt patterns, such as the nine diamond and maple leaf, my Grandmother taught to my Mother who is still quilting today at the age of 77. Also, upon the marriage of my Father and Mother, my Grandmother gave them two hand made quilts, one blanket, one set of pillows, and a feather tick. The same was done for their other children who married.

McNeely and Victoria's house, as described to me by my parents and other relatives, consisted of a main log house standing 1-1/2 stories tall and another large log kitchen joined to the main house by an enclosed hallway. From all indications of the above descriptions the style of this home would be called a dog trot type log home. The exception to this style home would the dog trot, or hallway, being enclosed. The only original buildings that remain standing at the home place are a canning house and a house built by thier son, Roy Bascum Montgomery. The canning house was constructed of two different outer walls filled with saw dust which served as insulation to prevent their canned food from freezing during the winter months. The house built by Roy for his Mother is a simple two story house consisting of two rooms up and two rooms down. One can also see the remains of their semi-enclosed spring water supply. This area consists of three flat rock walls semi-enclosing the spring where they obtained their drinking water. The homeplace is currently owned by a Phillips family.

Floyd County records state where James Clayton Montgomery received 30-7/8 acres of land as a gift from his parents on 31 January 1919 (D.B. 44 - page 442). Records also state where he obtained the inheritence from his brother, John Bruce Montgomery, on 10 October 1921 (D.B. 44 - page 499). According to this deed Clayton paid a total of $400.00 for this share to be paid in the following amounts: one note owed by Bruce in the amount of $51.50 with a date due of 13 October 1921 was to be paid to M. D. Sutphin; one note owed by Bruce in the amount of $135.00 with a date due of 3 January 1922 to be paid to F. F. Showalter; and the remainder to be paid to Bruce at the end of 18 months.

Several years after McNeely's death in 1921 it became necessary for his wife to sell off tracts of their farm. Records state the land originally purchased from J. L. Montgomery was disposed of by their son, Roy Bascum Montgomery. Barney G. Montgomery signed his inheritence away of January 3, 1929 for the amount of $300.00 (D.B. 48 - page 449). He designated that his portion of the money be given to his Mother in payments of $100 cash when the deed was signed and two equal installments six months apart from that date.
Luna M. and M. L. Wade signed their portion away on 1 April 1929 in the amount of $350.00 to be paid in three equal payments (D.B. 48 - page 451). Nora M. and E. T. Phillips signed away their portion on 3 March 1930 for the amount of $400.00 cash (D.B. 49 - page 8). Christina M. and A. M. Cox signed their portion away on 9 October 1933 for the amount of $350.00 cash (D.B. 51 - page 222). S. V. Montgomery signed her interest away on 3 December 1934 for the sum of $1.00 (D.B. 52 - page 123) to her son Roy.
The amount of $625.00 was to be held in trust for Abie Lee Montgomery who was under age at the time of this document.

When Ruby Ethel Montgomery died 1 June 1932, Roy Montgomery obtained signatures from all his brothers and sisters (and their spouses) for the 130 acre tract of land obtained from J. B.
Quesenberry (D.B. 51 - page 90) to cover her burial and medical expenses. It also shows where her husband, Carlos Price, signed over the property for the expenses. The deed records show where Ruby's burial and medical expenses were in the amount of $70.00 to Clarence Mabry for funeral expenses and $50.00 to Dr. J. C.
Rutrough for medical expenses. Roy also provided a tomb stone for Ruby's grave.
