- OBITUARY: George H. Berry, Downs' Chapel, Dec'd
Downs' Chapel, Feb. 26 - Kenton Hundred, especially the Downs'
Chapel community, was greatly shocked by the sudden death of Ex-sheriff
George H. Berry of near Downs Chapel, who died at his home, Saturday
morning, Feb. 9th, at 8 o'clock, aged 66 years. He arose that morning as
well as usual ate a hearty breakfast and shortly after he was seized with
a heart attack, and in less than 10 minutes, was dead without being able
to speak a word. He was the son of the late John T. and Unity A. Berry,
of near Hartly. He was born in New Castle County, in 1857. He was
elected sheriff of Caroline County Maryland in 1894, and served a term of
two years, was also appointed Notary Public a few years later. He had a
wide circle of friends, and was greatly loved by all who knew him. He
was an official member of Downs Chapel M. P. Church, and will be greatly
missed in this community. He is survived by his wife and two children:
one son, William A. Berry, of Felton, and one daughter, Mrs. Winbert C.
Wright, of Downs Chapel, also five sisters and one brother: Mrs. Mary E.
Ford, Downs Chapel; Mrs. Hannah Short, Kenton; Mrs. Addie Sutton,
Philadelphia, Pa; Mrs. Jettie Powell, Newark; Mrs. Lydia Johnson, Wilm;
and Mr. John T. Berry, Newport. Funeral servies took place Wednesday,
Feb. 13th, at 1 p.m. , from his late residence at Downs Chapel. Interment
was made at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna. Rev. L. E Haddaway officiated.
Handwritten family notes state: George H. Berry, son of John Berry and
Unity his wife was born Sept. 5th, 1857, died Feb. 9th, 1924.
