The Montgomery family originated in France in the 9th century. The name
probably comes from the Latin "Mons Gomeris", of "Gomer's Mount". Gomer was the hereditary name of the Gauls.
According to D.B. Montgomery, the name Montgomery has been spelled at least 44 different ways. The Montgomerys that we are descended from were Scotch-Irish Protestants.
James was the father of three sons: Hugh, Robert and William. He emigrated to America in 1666, probably coming from Ireland, and settled on the James river near Jamestown, VA. Hugh returned to Ireland where he died without issue. Robert was granted 850 acres of land in 1679. Robert and William both married and had children. We descend from Robert. His wife's name is unknown. (The Montgomerys and TheirDescendants, 1903, D.B. Montgomery, 11, 14-15, 19, 54,138-9,149-50).
