Some of the earliest settlers in this region, who lived here when theparish was still part of Rapides and Sabine, are buried here. One burialis said to be that of a young Confederate soldier who died when he waspassing through on his way to Texas to see his mother. Jack Hadnot,Vernon Parish Historian, recorded the following notes from Rev. Franklin& Connerly:
In 1834, Jonathan Franklin, his wife and six sons, Willie, James,Benjamin, George, Jackson, & Thomas arrived in Anacoco. They were ontheir way to Texas from Tennessee, when they decided to settle in thisarea. They built two log houses, one for the family and one for thepigs. It was necessary to house domestic animals because of the wildanimals, and in fact, Jimmy Franklin once killed a bear with a Barlowknife because it was about to kill his favorite dog. Jonathan's wifehelped establish Holly Grove Church.
