Lt. Robert Donald Thaxton, Sabine Parish, Sabine Index, Many, LA, Jun 2,1944
2 Jun 1944 - Lt. Robert Donald Thaxton, age 20, U.S.M.C.R., was fatallyinjured in an airplane crash at Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Fla., May 17and died shortly after.
He was the sons of the late Barto and Mrs. Thaxton of Mt. Carmelcommunity and graduate from Mt. Carmel high school in 1939, was presidentof his class and a favorite with all teacher and classmates. He attendedL.S.U. 1940-41 before enlisting in naval aviation, took preflighttraining at Centenary college, Shreveport. He received his commission ofsecond lieutenant in U.S.M.A.C.R., April 19, 1944, He was one of thehighest ranking students throughout his training. He was located at CecilField, Jacksonville, Fla., for further training.
He is survived by a brother, Raydon M. Thaxton, U.S. navy, SouthwestPacific; five sisters, Mrs. Wm. F. Fridell of Columbus, Ga., Mrs. C. H.Thigpen of Tulsa, Okla., Mrs. C. W. Davis, Mrs. Luther Byrd and Mrs. R.P. Corley of Florien.
Funeral services were held at Mt. Carmel Baptist church Sunday, May 20,10:30 a.m. Rev. O. C. Coburn of Florien officiating. Pallbearers were:Ensign C. W. Davis, U. S. N. Luther Byrd, C. H. Thigpen, Wm. F. Friddell,Clayton Corley and Kenneth Davis, SF 1/C U.S.N. Interment was in Mt.Carmel cemetery under direction of Massingill funeral home.
