20 Mar 1996 - Services for Mr. Leon Darby Salter, 95, of Shreveport wereheld at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 18, 1996 at the Rose-Neath MarshallStreet Chapel. The Rev. Paul C. Carroll, Sr. Pastor of Mangum MemorialMethodist Church officiated. Masonic Rites were conducted by the membersof the Queensborough Masonic Lodge. Interment was in Forest Park Cemetery.
Mr. Salter was born in Negreet. The oldest of 14 children of Edward Foreand Lula Isabelle Salter, was a resident of Shreveport for over 50 years,a retired carpenter and builder. He was the oldest living graduate ofMany High School, attended LSU and graduated from Northwestern University.
Mr. Salter taught school at Springridge, near Pleasant Hill from 1920through 1923. He then supervised the building of several roads throughNatchitoches Parish, the largest project, being the road which ranthrough Kisatchie. He ran the first pipe for the dedication of gas inNatchitoches and later plumbing many
commercial buildings and residents.
He was an active farmer in Red River Parish from 1928 until 1946. Otherendeavors were Fedeal Crop Allocation, First Soil ConservationCommissioner elected to the Sabine District. He was active in theconstruction trade until he was 88 years old. He was a steward andchairman of the building and grounds committee at Wynn Memorial MethodistChurch and the oldest member of his Sunday School Class at MangumMemorial Methodist Chruch. Mr. Salter was a Master Mason for over 70years and a member of the Queensborough Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Salter is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mrs. Zelma White Salter,two sons, LeDarby Salter and his wife Jane of Shreveport, Richard Salteralso of Shreveport; four sister, Mrs. Thelma Davenport of DeRidder, LA,Mrs. Devonia Willard of Texerkana, Tx, Mrs. Ruth Thompkins and Mrs.Juanita Edward, both of Many; one brother, Norman Salter of Lafayette;four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
