Notes - SUBMISSION: By Abigail Riffe Montgomery Kirtley, CMS 40, May, 1990 (Abigail died in July, 1993.)
Also by Irene Duncan Estes, CMS 1163, on Sept. 26, 1996.
BURIAL: Francis is buried on the "Bud" Montgomery Farm.
MARRIAGE: Info from Family Bible per Irene Estes.
From Irene Estes: Francis Montgomery came to Adair Co., KY in 1804 and must have been a wealthy man. From Perrins's "Kentucky a History of the State" he says, "Francis M. was a wealthy man and a slave owner from Virginia and after coming to KY owned 2000 acres of land and many slaves...Tradition say he drove his livestock through Cumberland Gap, and after leaving the Wilderness Road followed buffalo trails to what is now Russell Co., KY; then turned north and settled in Adair Co., KY on about 2000 acres of land about 6 miles east of Columbia, Adair Co., KY.
His mother is thought to have been a Monroe. Francis came from Albemarle Co., VA. A reference to a father for Francis M. is mentioned in "The Montgomery's and Their Descendants" by D. B. Montgomery, published in 1903, pages 347-48 has a letter from one J. F. Montgomery - May 4, 1899. He refers to his great grandfather as Francis, and his great great grandfather as "John".
Besides Perrins's History you will find Francis in "Albemarle County in Virginia" by Woods, p. 316. In the "VA. Militia in Rev. War" by McAllister, p. 105-06, Section 100, you find Ensign Francis Montgomery. Again, in "Chronicles of Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA", by Chalkley you find Ensign Francis M. on p. 474-475. One of the most interesting references is "The VA. Magazine", Vol 18, p. 140-43, Francis signed the Petition of Dissenters of Albemarle, Amburst & Buckingham", on Oct. 22, 1776.
In Francis' will he leaves all of real & personal estate to wife Mary as long as she lives. Then to each of children over 200 acres each and son Joel 345-1/2 acres and each child was left a slave/slaves.
