      Funeral services for E. M. Patrick, retired Many businessman, anddescendant of some of the earliest pioneers in Sabine Parish, were heldSaturday, March 22, at 10 a.m., at the Many First Baptist Church.

      Officiating at the services were the Rev. William H. Rose, and Dr. KellyFitzgerald, both former pastors. Interment was in the Many Cemetery,under the direction of the Warren Meadows Funeral Home.

      Pallbearers were Tim Fluitt, Jason Fluitt, Robert Hendrick, Bruce Gandy,Allen Rials, Bobby Derrick, Norman Booker Jr., and Ray Pass Jr.

      Serving as honorary pallbearers were W. R. Miller, I. D. Bostian, WalterThomas, Dr. Liang S. Oey, Hubert Andries, Hubert Patrick, W. E. "Boots"Hayes.

      The family has requested that any memorials be made to the Many FirstBaptist Church, the McDade Hospitality House, 1925 Warrington Place,Shreveport, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

      Mr. Patrick died Wednesday, March 19, following a brief illness. He was82.

      Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Myrtle Elizabeth Gandy Patrick;one daughter, Jean Elizabeth Patrick Hendrick of Lawton, Okla.; and herchildren, Robert Addison Hendrick of Moore, Okla., and Elizabeth StewartHendrick of Charlottesville, Virginia; and one son, Douglas MorganPatrick and wife Deanne of Many; and their sons, Steven Timothy Fluitt ofHornbeck, and Jason Daniel Fluitt of Monroe. Also surviving are two greatgrandchildren, Nikki Renee Fluitt, and Patrick Steven Fluitt of Hornbeck.

      Mr. Patrick was preceded in death by three brothers, Glen Patrick, RobertPatrick, and Rollie Patrick; and two sisters, Mattie Lee Pass, and FayeAlford.

      Born in Many, on Dec. 21, 1914, he was one of five children born toRobert Lee Patrick, and Mattie Lee Parrott. His maternal ancestors, earlySabine pioneers, received a Spanish Land Grant in the late 1700's in thisarea.

      Raised in Many, he graduated from Rural Alliance School, before joiningthe basketball team at Northwestern College in Natchitoches. He latertransferred to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where hestudied entomology.

      After working as a salesman in the Insecticide Division ofSherwin-Williams, Mr. Patrick returned to Many, and opened Sabine Seedand Feed. He expanded into the wholesale grocery business, creatingPatrick Wholesale, and then founded Patrick-Miller Tractor Company, withW. R. Miller. Today, Patrick's son, Doug, owns and operates the business.

      During his career, he also owned a cattle farm, where he maintained aherd of registered Angus. Following retirement from the business world in1973, Mr. Patrick continued in cattle farming.

      A respected businessman, he was one of the original members of the SabineRiver Authority, which initiated the partnership between Louisiana andTexas, to dam up the Sabine River, and create Toledo Bend Reservoir.

      He was also a charter member of the Sabine Parish Chamber of Commerce,and served on the Sabine Parish School Board.

      A member of the First Baptist Church of Many, he served on the BuildingCommittee of the present sanctuary, and at one time taught a Men's SundaySchool class.
