Alexander arrived in the US in 1854 and lived in Linn county, Iowa for some time. arriving in Sullivan 1857. He was a merchant in Milan opening a tin shop in 1858 which expanded into a dry goods store known as A.S. McDuff and Co. He was also a large land owner in Sullian County by 1877 having a large portion of land just west of Milan as well as having one of the Milan Additions named for him.

McDuff, Alexander Stevenson, b. Johnston, Renfrewshire, Scotland May 12, 1837; came to Milan 1857; m. Mary Montgomery; d. Oct 22, 1901. Surviving are his wife and children: Allen, Belle (Mrs. Geo. Collins)Mae, Maude, and Ralph.
