Notes - Mary Ann Montgomery married William Morrison Kendrick in York about 1820-22 as daughter was born in 1824. There is a petition in the archives asking for her husbands release from prison on December 12, 1837. It reports that he was taken to the gaol on December 7, 1837 and her house was robbed several times, taking everything of value. It was on 7 Dec. 1837 that the Montgomery Tavern was burned down by the British because MacKenzie's men had been meeting there. John Montgomery was also taken prison. Everyone taken in was tried and found guilty of Treason against the state. All were sentenced to hang. John and some other were given a reprieve and sentenced changed to "Transportation" so they were held at Fort Henry. It was from there that John escaped and spent ten years in the Rochester, N.Y. When he finally got a pardon under Queen Victoria, he returned to Toronto and built another Inn on Yonge Street.
William M. Kendrick was not one of the men who was hanged as he was released on Dec 21, 1837, reported at end of wife's petition in the Ontario archives
A memorial to those men who were hanged rather than imprisoned with John Montgomery was to be erected in Toroto in 1994.
Mary Ann Montgomery was married a second time to a Mr.James H. Siddons. No date but sometime before 1870. Arnold K. Stewart sent copy of note that was written by Capt. Harvey A. Stewart, grandson of Mary Ann Montgomery.
"Adam Davis wrote that when he was living at Mr. Siddon's --Siddons was the 2nd husband of Grandma Stewart's mother & was(alive) when I was a baby. They lived on the farm W of ours adjoining (one) Nathaniel _. Stewart lived there afterwards. Uncle(____) sent this to me when he (____ ____) the clock." Arnold added post script- "Evidently Mary Ann visited her daughter after William Kendrick died and stayed to become Mrs. Siddons." On the opposite end of the sheet of paper is written in large legible script: "SO MERRY SO MARY SO MARY ARE WE. . .NO MORTAL ON EARTH LIKE MISSES AND ME. SING, HI HORY O SUNG, HI DON DONG. GIVE MISTER HIS PIPE AND NOTHING GOES WRONG." This must belong to same packet of info. Perhaps an old ditty. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sheet enclosed in Arnold K. [ Statira. One had to be the older of two.] Even though both were Baptized in Sept. 1796, it does not mean they were born that year only that they were born after 1792 or they would have been Baptized with the older children. If one was going to shave off a year or so, I would think it would be Mary Ann since she married a younger 2nd husband. We might learn more if we knew when she first married William Kendrick in York. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
