Notes - Alexander III, son of Major Alexander was even more conservative in his politics than his father. He and his father both had a falling out with John, (the "rebel") when he was supporting Willima Lloyd Mackenzie by contributing to enable Mackenzie to go to London and present the case to Parliament hoping to get more Englishmen's rights extended to Canadian colonials. John, and others resented the power of both the Anglican and Roman Catholic in controlling their destinies and wanted the same rights as men had in England. Major Alexander and his son, Alexander III wanted the so called "elite" to remain in control to eliminate the "riff-raff" from governing.
Eventually, the father and his oldest son, John were reconciled. John did not approve of the use of violence by Mackenzie's followers and Alexander Jr. was able to see that reforms were necessary. Certainly, seeing how his daughter, Mary Ann (wife of William Kendrick) was treated must have made the father see that without reforms to the legal system no one was safe in their own home. This must have over come Major Alexander Montgomery's objections to John Montgomery's political beliefs. He did not live to see John pardoned nor would he have approved of Alexander III and the Stillwell Willson trying to break his 1840 will which left the bulk of his estate to his youngest son, Richard Montgomery. Alexander Montgomery received rank of Captain in the War of 1812.
He was married twice. Rebecca Willson (Smith) was sister of Stillwell Willson. Stillwell Willson served as best man in some Montgomery weddings. His second marriage was to Eliza Bruce. It appears information we have on his second marriage comes from a George Montgomery who lived in New York City. He contributed to the Malcolm Stern Myer V chart which shows father, Benjamin Myer and wife, Rachel with their children. Judah Myer, their second daughter married to Alexander Montgomery and showing only three children: John (n.d.), Alexander b. 1792 d. 1867; Sarah (n.d.). Since "Eliza Bruce's" name was written in several places, one can assume that this George did at some time visit Toronto and learn a few things about the family, but left much blank.
