Notes - Mary Haehnel, oldest daughter of Gottfried & Christina Haehnel was born in German and may have been trained there as a pastry chef. From what I thought I learned from letters and family stories, the family of four came to America and settled in either Rochester, N.Y. or in Ontario, Canada. Mary and her younger sister, Anna worked as domestics for wealthy family in Rochester, N.Y. It is uncertain where Mary met David Montgomery but they must have fallen passionately in love.
The story comes down from Anna Haehnel Nelson's daughter, Helen Reevely. She wrote in a sort of diary how David had swooped and taken Aunt Mary away from her family. She wrote how her mother, Anna and her grand parents suffered in never knowing that Mary was still alive. David must have had powerful ability to persuade her to run off with him. We cannot know if he ever divorced his first wife in Toronto or not. We do not even know if they later were married. Mary did later write to her sister and they were reunited in both Chicago and Rochester, N.Y. Later their two daughters who were cousins became good friends and today, the next generation is still in contact and appreciate a new kind of friendship. Mary's daughter was Florence Elizabeth Montgomery and Anna's was Helen Nelson who became Helen Reevely. Florence had four daughters, two of them, Patricia Hinmana and Florence "Betti" HInman have become well-acquainted with one of Helen's daughters, Beryl Reevely (now Mrs. Bernie Claar of Golden, Colorado.) We have combined our research efforts to uncover more information.
From Soundex film, LDS learned the following information on 1900 census. In Vol. 25, Sheet 18, Line 43 it states the following information:

A more recent discovery is a photo of a woman who resembles Mary Haehnel but this is one taken in Gorlitz, Germany. It was then part of Prussia in prov. of Dresden, near Polish border, also called Sachsen and Selesia. The eyes are much like Mary's but Mary was only a toddler when they came to America in 1862 or 63. This could be her mother and name on the photo might say, Christolina Brock. A letter has also turned up through Anna Haehnel Nelson's descendants written by Gottfried Haehnel in 1898. We know now that Gottfried operated a lime kiln in Neustadt, Ontario. Another photo of young man could be a son, with town shown as Listowell, Ont. He resembles photo of another man, taken in either New York city or Newport, R.I. This man resembles a Germanic type.
