!BIRTH; MARRIAGE; DEATH; BURIAL: HOLEMAN NEWSLETTER; vIX,i2,p18, by Merry Ann
Malcolm, R.R. 3, Box 185-A, Kewanee, IL, 61443.
BURIAL was at Wallis ceme.
Birthdate and all following information per Walter E Belt, Jr was 9 Dec 1838,
KY.!Died as a result of a team runaway about 15 yrs after the accident. She is
buried in Wallis Public Cemetery next to husband George William Belt.
Efforts to find the family history of Nancy Sultania Holman have met little
success to date. We have no idea of the background of the name Sultania .Our
best record evidence is in the l850 Ray Co Mo census that shows:
#494 Jeremiah Crowley age 62 born VA
Polly age 62 born VA
Nancy Holman age 15 born MO
Jeremiah Crowley Jr age 12 born MO
Is this our Nancy? We think so. But of special potential is this Jeremiah
Crowley Jr married Lucinda Holman in 1862 in Ray Co MO.. and in the same
1850 MO census the residence of Tilghman W Belt was #485 as compared to
residence # 494 for the above,, they couldnt be too far removed from each
other which may have made it easy for George William Belt to develop a romantic
association with the Nancy Holman shown above? Who was Lucinda Holman? Sister?
Cousin?
Was Jeremiah Crowley a Christian Minister?
In a letter dated 3 Nov 1994 Mrs Beverly Watts advised: " The January people
and the Holman people are buried in Old City Cemetery in Richmond, MO".
(Could Nancy's family be buried here, and possibly friends with the January
and Belt families?) ALSO from, "Early Days of Randolph Co MO".. In the fall of
1817 William Holman and his brother Joseph came from Madsion Co KY and settled
near old Franklin. Squire Holman, a son of William came with his father. In the
fall of 1818 Joseph Holman came settling near his brother William. Nancy's
early line??
Texas 1900 Federal Census DeWitt Co shows Nancy's parents were both born in
Tennessee. This lends weight to the older sister/guardian story told below.
Following will be several portions of different letters written by my Aunt
Jennie Mae Belt Bennett who did much family history research from approximately
1950 to 1970:
Letter 6 Aug 1967 to Missouri Assc of Christian Churches:" She (Nancy) and
George were married by Minister of the Gospel Samuel P. Johnson.
Undated letter to "Mrs Rich" (This is Mrs Cleo H Rich Springdale, Arkansas)
and this letter would have been written in October of 1960): "Nancy Sultania
Holman was a refined dignified lady with beautiful curly auburn hair and baby
white complexion which might have been partly attributed to a face cream she
made herself. The nice skin and auburn curly hair came down to my father and
one of my brothers and brothers daughter.
(Continued) For some family lore that Geo Wm (My Grandfather) handed down to
me: Nancy was left an orphan at an early age and was raised in a Christian
Ministers home in Arkansas (Added..this may have been Missouri).
She was a graceful dancer and told me on my last visit in 1905 with her that
she didnt care to go to Heaven if there wasnt any music and dancing there. (She
was a devout Christian). This came up because we were discussing the fact that
our parents thought it was wrong to have musical instruments in church. She and
Geo Wm were members of The Progressive Christian Church while my parents were
members of The Firm Foundation Church (Now called Church of Christ and The
Christian Church) (Continued) There was a string of rubies that Geo Wm divided
between my cousin (Now deceased) and myself. They were strung on a gold fancy
chain. I was afraid that it might break so I took them to a friend of our
family for him to restring. They proved to be expensive garnet. According to
GEO WM THEY HAD COME DOWN TO THE ELDEST DAUGHTER UNTIL NANCY SULTANIA WAS THE
THIRD ONE TO INHERIT THEM. When she had no daughter Geo W divided it between
her two granddaughters. (I was the oldest but her father was the oldest). I
used the old gold wire chain but had a gold chain run through it, I kept out a
few and had each of my three boys a hand made tie tack made that made them the
6th (Added,, 5th owner but 6th generation as Aunt Jennie's parents generation
was skipped).
When I am through and my grand daughter Donna inherits mine she will be the 7th
generation.
(Continued) Nancy Sultania was a school teacher and did beautiful needlework.
She took the prize at the Yoakum County Fair for ladies above 60 yrs of age
needle work. (Continued) She was a cripple about 15 or 16 years before she
passed away. She was driving her horse pulling a buggy in Yoakum near the RR
track. There was a train engine nearby. The engineer blew off steam frightening
the horse and causing it to bolt on to the RR track upsetting the buggy in
front of the train. She was caught between the buggy and RR ties resulting in a
broken shoulder, hip, arm and very near death for nearly two weeks.
She used a crutch for the rest of her 15 years of life.
During this time she had 4 or 5 strokes and finally passed away one day after
she had had a stroke. That was 6 Apr 1906 in Yoakum, TX. She was buried at
Wallis Tx. Her husband Geo Wm then lived with my parents in Wallis until he
died in November of 1911.(Added: He was also buried in Wallis next to Nancy in
The Wallis Public Cemetery.
Letter from Mrs Cleoteen Cowan (She signs, "Another Holman") of Harrison
Arkansas dated 25 Mar 1966: Portion of letter reads as follows: "I was Cloteen
Holman before my marriage. I was daughter of Rack Holman and Pearl
Holman. Rack was the son of Ed Holman. If Nancy Sultania Holman was your
grandmother then we are related. According to Mrs Rich of Springdale Arkansas
Nancy Sultania Holman was a sister to my father Rack Holman. (Added: Seems
nearest to firm data we have on Nancy other than what her husband told to Aunt
Jennie).
POSSIBLE?,,,remember Geo Wm said his wife Nancy was orphaned at an early age
and raised in a Christian home? Letter dated 8 Aug 1966 to Aunt Jenny
from Mrs Winnie Patton 3409 New Haven Ave, Ft Wayne Indiana 46803 said that her
Grandmother was Justina who came from Tennessee to Ray County Missouri and
there married Geo Webb (One source said he was a minister, another source said
he was a plantation owner)...Justina was Guardian of a young girl..(Sister?
Nancy?) Justina lived in Butler Missouri..Justina was born 1818 and Nancy 1835
which fits as being an older sister guardian??
Letter dated Oct 28, 1960 from W.H.Holman 1500 North Main, Cassville, Missouri
to Aunt Jenny (W.H.Holman is the father of Mrs Cleo Holman Rich) reads, in
part, as follows:" Ed Holman , father of Nancy and Rack Holman lived on South
Fork in Barry Co Mo near Mano in the SE part of the County. Nancy and Rack were
children of a former marriage. Nancy was a cripple (Added: This statement
doesent fit as our Nancy wasnt crippled until about 1890 at age 55 in Yoakum
TX). Rack lived awhile with the W. H. Holman family (Cleo's parents??) as the
father and family moved to Monett Mo. Ed became bed-fast. Later Rack married an
Arkansas girl and lived there until his death about a year ago".
My summary feeling: Our Nancy is the 15 year old shown in the Missouri 1850
Ray County census living in the Crowley home. Also we must accept all the
family lore told by GW Belt to Aunt Jenny which Aunt Jenny listed in the
above letter to Mrs Rich. All other material set out above including Justina as
older sister and guardian must be taken with a question..I like to think that
her brother was Rack.. that her father was Ed...but it can't go much further
than a wish at this point. Was Sultania her real family name then did she take
the name Holman from the family who raised her? Since she was living with the
Crowley family in 1850 I dont think she was living in the Justina Holman Webb
family,,??? In a July 2, 1968 letter from Aunt Jenny to Disciples of Christ
Historical Society Nashville Tenn Aunt Jenny stated, "In the Minister's
Directory 1910 year book there was a minister named G.W.Webb living in Kansas
City,,could this minister be the husband of Justina Holman Webb who has been
suggested as an older sister and guardian of Nancy...??If so when would Nancy
have lived with Justina? Before the 1850 census when Nancy was 15,,or later
during the 5 years before she was married in 1855??
HELP!
One final "summary"
One source says her father was Ed Holman and her brother was Rack Holman. That
Justina Holman Webb was her older sister and guardian. One source says Justina
was married to Hudspeth Webb, another source says she was married to Geo. W.
Webb. We know Geo W Webb was a minister. Another source says Nancy's father was
William T Holman and that she had a brother named William Jr
Copies of numerous letters related to Nancy are in possession of W E Belt Jr
Box 739 Flatonia TX 78941 and the originals are in possession of Mrs Donna
Bennett Brown, granddaughter of my Aunt Jennie Mae Belt Bennett, of 296 Belsize
Drive, Toronto , Ontario, CANADA M 4 S- I M 8.
The Register of Death for Nancy Sultania Holman shows cause of death:" Lagrippe
and Injuries in Runaway."(The runaway occured some 15 years before her death!).
The Lagrippe at the time of her death was what we now describe as influenza or
flu.
The following is taken from a letter from Mrs Beverly Watts Box 905 Willows CA
95988, "William Belt (Sr) had a daughter named Lucy, who married Ephraim
January Jr. I Notice you are descended from the Holmans. Do you have any
records of Lucy and Ephraim's daughter Martha (Maria) Ellen January who married
W E Holman in Ray Co Mo. I hoped the Holman genealogy would reveal something
about Martha's grandfather, William Belt" Ephraim January Jr evidently lived
with Wilson R Holman family and is buried in the same plot at the Old City
Cemetery in Richmond MO. Wilson R Holman was the executor of Ephraim January's
estate. Wilson was his son-in-law having married Martha Ellen January.
NOTE: Wilson R Holman Rin # 2187, husband of Martha Ellen January Rin # 2186,
moved from the state of Tennessee as a young man to a farm in Ray County,
Missouri for a few years and then moved to the town of Richmond Mo where he
opened a hardware and furniture store. Note that some sources indicate that
the Justina who may have been an older sister of Nancy Sultana Holman, came
from Tennessee. Could Wilson and Martha be Nancy's parents?
This database is always under construction. Please contact the author with any additions or corrections, but please don't ask if I have more information about someone. All of the information I have about people born pre-1903 is already in the database. Happy hunting!
