DEAN HOUSE, 100 Morgan Street. Corner of Morgan and Main Street.
This house was built in 1852 as a residence. In 1853, it became the
Commerce Bank of Kentucky (the Woodford Bank) until 1877 when it was sold
to G.Y. Neal and was used by the Dean Family. In 1885, Mrs. Martha Dean
bought the property and W. R. Dean opened a boarding house named Woodford
House. After a few years, it became known simply as the Dean House.
Dean House was known throughout the south for it's "Old Kentucky" meals
served in its dining room. The porch and balcony was a later addition.

THE DEAN HOUSE was built as a residence in 1852 and occupied the
following year by the commerical bank of Kentucky. William R. Dean opened
it as a hotel in 1879 and his fine food became famous throughout
Kentucky. Legend says the house was a brothel in early years of the War
Between the States, and Cavalry General John Hunt Morgan's men frequented
the house and kept their horses in a nearby stable. In later years, it
housed various businesses. It was restored into apartments in 1988. From
brochure: " A Walk Down Morgan Street."
This database is always under construction. Please contact the author with any additions or corrections, but please don't ask if I have more information about someone. All of the information I have about people born pre-1903 is already in the database. Happy hunting!
