- GENEALOGY SUBMITTED BY GEORGE LEWIS MONTGOMERY, CMS 1086.
Based upon information from census, family, church and burial records, the following has been established.
James and Hannah Montgomery are the earliest members that I have been able to discover. This information came from the census records of 1810 which list James as residing in the Town of Kortright, Delaware County, State of New York with:
4 Males, 2 under 10
1 Male, 10-16
1 Male, 26-45
2 Females, Under 10
1 Female, 26-45
Census of 1820 lists the same, each being 10 years older.
Census of 1830 is as follows:
1 Male 50-60 James
1 Female 40-50 Hannah
2 Males, 20-30 James C. & John M.
1 Male, 15-20 Timothy
1 Female, 15-20
1 Female, 20-30 Mary and or ?
Census of 1840 is as follows:
1 Male 60-70 James
1 Male & 1 Female, 20-30 Timothy and Mary
1 Male, 30-40 James C. or John M.
1 Male, 10-15 James William (Wilson),
born 12-28-1827 - went
by J.W., etc.
1 Female, 80-90 Mother of James
NOTE: No female 50-60 which would agree with the death of Hannah notice in the Delaware Gazette of October 21, 1835 stating that "Hannah Montgomery, wife of James Montgomery, died on 10-11-1835 in the Town of Kortright, a member of the Methodist-Episcopal Church". Also, James' Mother is now living with him at 80-90 which would indicate she would have been living in the area after the Scottish settlement of Kortright and Harpersfield, Delaware County, New York as stated in the New York Gazetteer in 1771. Settled mostly by Scots from Glengary in the Great Glen of Scotland. The ship PEARL under Capt. John McDonell (Doneld) brought 260 McDonnel's (McDonelds) and 20 other Scots on 10-18-1773.
Census of 1905, town of Stamford, Delaware County, New York, Dell Montgomery Simmonson, George L. Montgomery, 32 and 18 respectively, and a Nellie Montgomery, 10, cousin of a Sloan McDonald.
Census of 1850 lists James the father now living with son Timothy Lyman Montgomery at Montgomery Homestead, Hobart, New York, Town of Stamford, Delaware County, at 70 years old. Vital stats of 1854 list only one 74 year old male died which leads me to believe that James was that male and would make his date of birth in the 1780 to 1854.
Mother listed as living with James in the Census of 1840 as 80-90 years old would make date of birth in the 1745-50 area. 30-35 when James was born and in the time of the Scottish settlement.
