  • Notes 
    • At the age of thirteen David went to Philadelphia and became a cabin boy
      on a coasting schooner. He was studious in nature and rapidly mastered
      navigation, receiving his papers of master in his nineteenth year. He
      made many trips along the coast, and on one trip to Rio de Janeiro, South
      America, the captain and crew were taken ill and he assumed command,
      bringing the vessel back to port.
      He later worked in the Philadelphia Navy Yard on the old frigate
      Constitution, and while there met and married Miss Mary Elizabeth Davis.
      She accompanied him on a number of his sea trips.
      In 1865 he removed his family to Little Creek, Kent County,
      Delaware, where he engaged in oyster planting, and is reputed to have
      been the first one to plant oysters on the Delaware shore. He eventually
      retired from the sea, became a farmer, storekeeper, and postmaster.
      Upon the death of his wife in 1916, he removed to Pitman, New
      Jersey, residing with his daughter, Ida Montgomery Pleasanton, died April
      18th, 1923 and was interred in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover, Kent County,
      Delaware.
      His wife, Mary Elizabeth Davis Montgomery, died January 18th, 1916,
      interment being made in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover, Kent County, Delaware.
