I am sending you my genealogical information along with some explanation about my 4G/Grandfather Samuel, Jr. This has been published but I think there are still a lot of questions and that is why I continue to try and come up with more details. Some researchers think that my GGG/Grandfather John goes back through John and Esther Houston Montgomery. This is based on the fact that in every generation from John and Margaret Montgomer one son's middle name was Houston. I believe one of the grandmothers must have been a Houston. The tradition of placing the name of Houston in one sons name seemed to start with my 3G/Grandfather John and my father's generation. J. Esther Montgomery and I have talked and we don't have any answers yet.
To date the information I am sending you contains the most evidence as to the father of my 3G/Grandfather John being Samuel Jr., and I am aware that most people have listed this Samuel as unmarried or disappeared but maybe this isn't fact.
I will continue to try and find the answers.
My husband, Walter, and I just came back from a trip to Kentucky where I confirmed some of the information about Samuel Jr. when we were in Frankfort. We are thinking of coming to Virginia sometime in June and try to find information about the Montgomerys and the Hatfields.

Howard Daws, is married to my fathers 1st cousin and is a retired college professor. Another cousin researched our family in the same way some twenty years ago, but since her death none of her research is available.

THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL MONTGOMERY, JR. AND HIS UNKNOWN WIFE: Of the children of Samuel Montgomery, Sr. and Margaret Nichols Montgomery, Samuel Montgomery, Jr., is the ancestor of my family. I shall, therefore, write a brief account of great great great grandfather Samuel Montgomery, Jr. and his family. Samuel, Jr. was born about 1741 or 1742 (it could have been as early as 1740) in Augusta County (now Botetourt County), Virginia. It is believed Samuel Montgomery, Sr. went to Virginia from Pennsylvania a little earlier than other members of the Montgomery family and that Samuel, Sr. met and married Margaret Nichols in Virginia and that this couple started their family before Samuel, Jr.'s parents and siblings moved to Virginia. This may account for the fact the first and third sons, rather than the first and second sons, of James Montgomery I and Ann Thomason Montgomery were sent to Virginia to arrange for the purchase of land before the family moved to the state of Virginia.
Be that as it may, we are now involved in the story of the family of Samuel Montgomery, Jr. and his unknown wife (my wife's great great great grandparents). To this couple was born the following children: (1) Elizabeth Montgomery (born about 1761 or 1762 in Virginia -- married Frederick Edwards and had no issue), (2) James Montgomery (born about 1762 or 1763 in Virginia -- served in the American Revolution -- drowned in the Mississippi River when a bear overturned the boat in which he was a passenger - was in the Battle of KasKaskia), (3) William Montgomery (born about 1764 or 1765 in Virginia -- served in the American Revolution -- died about 1830), (4) Robert Montgomery (born about 1766 or 1767 in Virginia -- no further information), (5) Joseph Montgomery (born 1 August 1768 in Virginia -- died 12 January 1842 -- married Jane Sproule and had issue), (7) Mary Montgomery (born about 1772 or 1773 in Virginia -- married Andrew Crockett and had issue), (8) Samuel Montgomery III (born about 1773 or 1774 in Virginia -- no further information), (9) John Montgomery (born 4 May 1775 in Virginia died in 1852 in Lawrence County, Alabama -- married Margaret, called Peggy, Alexander and had issue). John and Margaret (Peggy) Alexander Montgomery were my wife's great great grandparents. Their family will be the subject of another Montgomery story.
There has been much confusion as to the children of the various Samuel Montgomeries, including Samuel Montgomery, Sr. of MONTGOMERY VII B and Samuel Montgomery, Jr. of this story, MONTGOMERY VIII.
Some have said Samuel Montgomery, Jr. died unmarried and childless.
To help substantiate what I have written above, I cite the following taken from SOME EARLY SETTLERS - LAWRENCE COUNTY, ALABAMA by Hugh L. Taylor and Ida Greenhaw Taylor. This citation includes what Hugh and Ida cite from other reputable sources. This citation was taken from pages 100, 101, and 102 in the publication named above. Hugh and Ida used numbers in parenthesis to denote the various generations, beginning with (1) as the generation of James Montgomery I and Ann Thomason Montgomery.
Beginning of citation: Samuel Montgomery, Jr. (3) -- Samuel Montgomery, Jr. (3), son of Samuel, Sr. (2) and third in line of decent from James Montgomery I (1), was born in Virginia in, perhaps, what is now Augusta County. He may have been born as early as 1740. He had a daughter Elizabeth (4) (married Frederick Edwards) who was born probably as early as 1760. Among his sons were James (4) and William (4) who were soldiers in the Revolution.
He received a land grant by order of the Montgomery County, Virginia Court on March 8, 1770 for Military Service. He was wounded in an expedition against the Cherokees in 1776. Also he is listed in John H. Gwathmey's HISTORICAL REGISTER OF VIRGINIANS IN THE REVOLUTION. The United State Census, 1790, Fayette County, Kentucky, indicates that he paid taxes on land, or assessed it, July 8, 1789.
Robert (4), William (4), John (4) assessed land in Fayette County, Kentucky February 26, 1790. These men were all brothers, most likely. Robert (4), Samuel (4), and William (4) assessed land in Woodford County, Kentucky on April 7, 1790. This is further evidence that these men were brothers.
According to Gaius Marcus Brumbaugh's REVOLUTION WARE RECORDS, page 557, he made a will in Franklin, Kentucky June 1, 1797 which was witnessed by his sons Robert (4) and William (4).
Brumbaugh further stated, Andrew Crockett, age 79, of Franklin County, Kentucky testified in 1835 that he was raised in the same county (Montgomery County, Virginia) with James Montgomery and was with him in the Campaign at Kaskaskia. From the affidavit of Andrew Steele, age 72, made in Oldham County, Kentucky July 1, 1837, the following names of nine children of Samuel Montgomery (3) father of the soldier, and living in Franklin County, Kentucky are obtained: Elizabeth (4) (married Frederick Edwards), and had a son James (5); James (4) (the soldier); William (4) who died about 1830; Robert (4); Nancy (4) (who married Nathaniel Evans), _____________ (4) (married Andrew Crockett); Samuel (4); John (4); and Joseph (4). All members of this family were dead in 1837 except John (4) and Joseph (4). The will of Samuel (3) (the father) of Franklin, Kentucky, dated June 1, 1797, was witnessed by Robert (4) and William Montgomery (4). The children of William (4), brother of James (4) were: Francis G. (5); Samuel C. (5); James H. (5); Jeptha D. (5); Margaret (5), who married William Graham; Louisa (5), who married John Bacon; and Priscilla (5), who married Archibald Bryant. The mother of these children had died prior to 1830. In 1832 Francis G. Montgomery (5) lived in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, 200 miles from Frankfort; Samuel C. (5) in Gallatin County, Kentucky, 50 miles from Frankfort. James H.
(5) and Jeptha D. (5) were executors of their father's estate, he never having made a will. Richard N. Johnson of Scott County, Kentucky was their attorney.
The John Montgomery (4), son of Samuel (3) mentioned in the above quotation is one of the principals or "link" in the line of decent being traced. Further attention will be given him later in this discourse because through him descended Martha Susan Montgomery (7), mother of Ida Greenhaw Taylor (8). All of the children of Samuel Montgomery, Jr. and his unknown wife were born in Augusta County (now Botetourt County), Virginia, but were later found in other near by Virginia counties. Then just after the Revolution ended Samuel, Jr. and most, if not all, of the family moved to Kentucky. Samuel Montgomery, Jr. purchased two hundred acres of land on the Cove in Botetourt County, Virginia on 9 March 1770 from William Sayers. Then on 1 August 1789 he sold the land to Gasper Reeder and the family moved to Woodford County (now Franklin County), Kentucky where some of the family would remain for the remainder of their lives while others of the family would move to other locations. Between 1 June 1797 (date of his will) and 1 November 1797 (date his will as proved) Samuel Montgomery, Jr. died in Franklin County, Kentucky. His hiers were his wife (unnamed) and his children. Samuel Montgomery, Jr.'s unknown wife died about 1830 or later.
Like his grandfather, James Montgomery I; his father, Samuel Montgomery, Sr.; several uncles; several nephews; and his sons Samuel Montgomery, Jr. had served his community, his state, and his nation well indeed. He, as was the case with many close relatives, had served in the American Revolution and in many other capacities.
The John Montgomery (4) in the citation given earlier in this dissertation was my wife's great great grandfather. His family will be the subject of MONTGOMERY IX - THE FAMILY OF JOHN MONTGOMERY AND MARGARET (PEGGY) ALEXANDER MONTGOMERY.
